Hump Day Randomness

Phish's Page McConnell is dropping a solo album.

It looks like Brian Eno is going to produce the next Coldplay album.

Indie labels are pissed at Youtube.

Yoko Ono's new album, Yes, I'm a Witch , features collaberations with The Flaming Lips, Peaches, Le Tigre, Porcupine Tree, Cat Power, Polyphonic Spree and more.

The new Modest Mouse album features The Shins' James Mercer on 3 songs and ex-Smiths guitarist is now a member of the band. In less than three years this band has gone from a 3-piece to like a 7 1/2-piece. I hope the album is good.

Here's an interview with The Hold Steady's Craig Finn.

Pretty Girls Make Graves is breaking up, but they are coming to Atlanta before the divorce papers go through.

Here's a couple Peter Bjorn and John Videos for you:

Jeff Tweedy, Atlanta 1/29

Last night's show at the Tabernacle featured an enigmatic and very much in character Jeff Tweedy berating an adoring sold-out crowd. Having ditched his band for a tour in favor of the very direct and effective intimacy of a solo acoustic set, the show was able to wander between his campfire vibe alt-country (for the record, i hate saying that) tunes and Tweedy's confrontational and insecurity-prone banter as freely and unprofessionally as he saw fit. Halting in the middle of the first verse of "Via Chicago", Tweedy asked the audience to help him out --- he had forgotten the lyrics. Adopting the persona of a trapped hero, his surly treatment of the audience brought to mind conventional images of the behavior of other iconic frontmen crowd-bashers (Waters? Corgan?.....Bixler?). Although cautiously, he performed in a way that was ultimately confident in his spell over the audience, who fed off of the tension created by Tweedy's act. I would go as far to say that his use of stage banter holds more merit as a dualistic tool of dynamics; his songs are so delicate and revealing, that by the end, his natural reaction is simply that he must take back what he has given away. 'No, Atlanta, you do not know me as you think you might'. His compensation for what he gives away in song is the rejection of the crowd on a personal level. This tension sets the audience up for the shift in mood back to Tweedy's often melancholy tone within a song. In a strange reversal of roles; for some songs excitement was almost exclusively built in the margins between songs, and torn down during the course of the next song.

As for the actual performance (when Tweedy remembered the words), it was, of course, flawless. His vocals and guitar arrangements were surprisingly complete in covering some of the more instrument-heavy Wilco songs. He was 'prepared' for this set; it's cleanliness once he was in song only supports any argument affirming his stage persona's at least partial superficiality. He played a good spread across his career; heavy on some more recent Wilco hits. Some personal highlights: Heavy metal drummer (in an acoustic set, an obvious extension on the song's irony), The Lonely 1 (as the only man on a stage filled with nothing but 6 guitars, some harmonicas and a rug), and Passenger Side (Chris Carraba don't know shit about sing alongs).

On a side note, the Minus 5 opened as a three piece, apparently with only one member of the original band. They sucked, especially the only dude that was actually in the band.

I would have a hard time considering any other solo acoustic show from any other frontman/artist as engaging. Jeff Tweedy is at the special point in his career where he has the history and catalog to truly develop his character onstage, which he effectively used last night to drag the audience closer by pushing them away............ for 30$ a seat.

Smashing Pumpkins Announce Dates!

So it looks like Billy and Jimmy are really gonna do it. The first Smashing Pumkins tourdates have been announced for festivals in Germany in June. The Smashing Pumpkins official website also claims they are in the studio now and a new album is coming soon. I'm hoping that since Bonnaroo has decided to release their line-up later than usual they are negotiating with the Pumpkins. It appears the Pearl Jam/Bonnaroo rumors are not true as PJ will be touring Europe at the time. A couple more weeks and we'll find out....

The Mars Volta new drummer!?!?!

Since losing former The Mars Volta badass Jon Theodore, TMV lost some cool points. But it looks like they are working hard on trying to earn those back. Rumor is that they are picking up Thomas Pridgen to play drums. He was the youngest (at 10 years old) person to ever be sponsored by Zildjian Cymbals and has alot of drummer cred. Official word has yet to be released, but on the TMV myspace page he is listed. Here's a video of the possible newest TMV member:

Humpday Newsbits

Bjork is working on an album due in "late spring" with the likes of Antony, Timbaland, Konono No1, and Lighting Bolt's Brian Chippendale.

Rage Against the Machine is all the rage right now and Tom Morello is releasing a solo album under his moniker "Nightwatchman" called One Man Revolution on April 24th. I think he's been watching V For Vendetta too much. Before Rage's Coachella one-time reunion, Nightwatchman will perform at SXSW.

Wilco will release a new album on May 15th entitled Sky Blue Sky. As you know, Jeff Tweedy is playing a soldout show in Atlanta monday night.

The Beyonce movie has picked up 60% of the Oscar nominations for best song and The Fountain gets no respect. Seriously, that movie is amazing. The Oscars are the new Grammys.

Brothers Past will be playing in Atlanta on St. Patrick's Day. Here's a good article.

Snow Patrol's drummer has broke his arm and is being replaced for a while. The new drummer should not affect how much Snow Patrol sucks.

Radiohead is back at work on their album due this year.

Beck is rereleasing the awesome and very underrated The Information on February 27th with new songs, remixes, a lyric sheet, and some more music videos.

Bonnaroo Update

The best part of January for me is the rumor blitz of Bonnaroo and Coachella line-ups. Current rumors circling the Bonnaroo Message Board are that The Police, Bob Dylan, and Pearl Jam are the headliners and that Bonnaroo will officially announce their line-up on January 31st. The Hold Steady are confirmed to play along with these bands. 177 Days and counting.

SXSW Rumors

The Austinist has compiled a list of confirmations and inside information of 240 bands they are 95%+ sure that will be there. Some acts that stick out to me: Aqualung, Badly Drawn Boy, Bloc Party, Blonde Redhead, Black Lips, Erase Errata, Girl Talk, Interpol, Les Savy Fav, Magik Markers, Mates of State, Morissey, RJD2, Snowden, Subtle, and Thurston Moore. I'd say all of these artists are good candidates to hit the festival circuit hard this year.

Live Show Review: Camera Obscura

Camera Obscura
January 17th, 2007
The Earl, Atlanta, GA

Just got back and it was a good show. They played pretty much everything off of Let's Get Out Of This Country for about an hour and then played a three song encore. The crowd was very talkative and Frontwoman Tracyanne Campbell completely forgot the words at the beginning of one of the songs, but they still shined. A great first show of the year for me and them. Hip-Hop: Beyond Beats and Rhymes

Sunday I was lucky enough to attend a special preview screening of the documentary by Byron Hurt called Hip-Hop: Beyond Beats and Rhymes. The movie specifically looked at concepts of manhood in rap music and was very entertaining. The screening was followed by a live discussion with Kurtis Blow, Grand Master Caz, Roxanne Shante, and Sparky D that was very educational. The documentary airs on PBS on February 20 so check it out.
