Friday Free-Style

Aw yeah, it's Friday again, Deerhunter or Kid Koala tonight! What to choose? Ted Leo and the Pharmacists will be at the Variety Playhouse Saturday night. I still don't know whether i'm going to that or the DJ Klever/Snowden extravanganza. Here's some videos to help me decide:

Deerhunter:

Ted Leo And The Pharmacists:

Snowden:

DJ Klever:

The Flaming Lips, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Wolfmother and more have made original tracks for the upcoming Spiderman 3 movie.

Bono is now a knight.

Sasquatch! Music Festival has added Clinic, Blackalicious, The Polyphonic Spree, and an extra Beastie Boys instrumental set plus many more acts. Check it out. Beastie Boys have a new album coming out this year.

Patti Smith is doing a covers album.

The new season of the Henry Rollins Show, starting next month, will feature live performances from The Mars Volta, The Stooges, and Ryan Adams and interviews with Marilyn Manson and Iggy Pop.

Black Eye Peas member Taboo got arrested for driving too high.

Tegan And Sara release their new album, The Con, in July.

The Smashing Pumpkins first performance will be in Paris. I'm kinda glad they will get their rust out overseas before (hopefully) playing a bunch of US dates.

Marilyn Manson and Slayer are going on tour together this summer. Marilyn Manson has new album out in June.

Korn and Evanescense are co-headlining this years helping of the Family Values Tour. Nu-metal will never die!!!

moe.down festival has added Ryan Adams and The Meat Puppets to their line-up. This fest held the August 30th-September 2nd in New York will also feature Medeski Martin and Wood and 6 sets from moe. over the weekend. 6 sets of moe. would make me mow down some wookies.

The Black Crowes are working on a new album.

The White Stripes have gotten creative with their marketing and created a puzzle about their new album:

Isaac Brock is not feeling the pressure of having the Billboard's #1 album.

Ratdog and Keller Williams will be at Chastain Park on July 7th.

The Preakness have a new 7" coming out.

Here's a new Trans Am video featuring former-The Mars Volta drummer Jon Theodore acting:

Kevin Barnes is already working on another Of Montreal album.

Thurston Moore and Jim O'Rourke are collaberating with some others to form a noise-supergroup. Yaher!

Thurston Moore is working on a new solo album at J Mascis studio produced by John Agnello (Rather Ripped #16 of 2006). There's a video of Thurston performing one of the songs at SXSW here.

Brightblack Morning Light will be at the Earl April 23rd. Here's an MP3: Everybody Daylight

Arctic Monkeys and Be Your Own Pet will be at the Tabernacle on May 19th.

Ozzfest is building its line-up, and Atlanta's Daath is playing some dates among others.

Review-"We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank" - Modest Mouse

I once made a statement that Ben Gibbard of Death Cab for Cutie was one of the greatest writers of our time. A friend of mine quickly shot back, "Pft, Isaac Brock can say in two words what takes Ben Gibbard a whole song". In this statement he was not bashing Gibbard, an artist my friend also had great admiration for, but was simply stating that none of Brock's contemporaries formed such clear thesis as "People are made of water and shit" or "We're put here just to make more dirt".

Prior to last week I would consider Ugly Casanova's "Sharpen Your Teeth" to be Brock's last great work. The 2004 Modest Mouse release "Good News For People Who Love Bad News" just didn't do much for me. Save for his circular ramblings about language on "Blame it on the Tetons", I found it lacking the core Modest Mouse essence that has separated the band from a Franz Ferdinand or a Wolf Parade. While the songs were still instantly recognizable as Modest Mouse, they lacked the darkness and simple complexity of their precursors.

Some would be quick to blame this fall from grace on the majors. However, this just doesn't seem to hold water; I dare you to deny the greatness of "The Moon & Antarctica", the band's major label debut. Others would point to Brock's personal problems; a stint in short stint in jail for a DUI and an attempted murder charge. While this sort of trouble would be enough to knock anyone of their game, "The Moon & Antarctica" was releases on the heals of rape accusations which eventually forced Brock to move from Seattle, WA to Gainesville, FL to escape a scene that had turned against him. To make matters worse, drummer Jeremiah Green, whose mesmerizing drumming defined some of the bands earlier work, had a break down during second day of recording and quit the band. Add to the mix new producer Dennis Herring, who the band had never before worked with, and it is a wonder this album was ever completed at all. For all its low points, the album "Good News..." stuck to very tight concept and found the band progressing from releasing a collection of loosely connected songs to creating a statement as an album. Not to mention it went platinum and has outsold all the previous Modest Mouse releases combined.

After suffering through a less than stellar and more than expensive live show from their second tour for "Good News..." I was ready to say good-bye. I wanted to hold on to the old Modest Mouse. I had no interest in anything that grew out of the same pot that "Good News..." was planted in. Upon the reading of the return of their drummer Jeremiah Green and the addition of Johnny Marr (of the fucking Smiths, WTF), I had shard of hope that Modest Mouse might be able return to greatness. When the new album was leaked to the P2P networks I couldn't resist; I had to have a listen (I have since purchased both the Deluxe CD and LP editions of this incredible album).

While those hoping for a return to the "Dial-a-Song" days could possibly still be disappointed by "We Were Dead Before the Ship Began to Sink", this album is far from the worst and very close to the best Isaac has ever penned. Songs like "Parting of the Sensory" not only close the curtains on the brightness of "Good News..." but they also mark the return of phrases like "Some day you will die and somehow something's going to steal your carbon". This album takes lessons learned in album crafting from "Good News..." and applies them to Brock's core competencies: musings of the universe, morality, and infinity. However, people expecting a second "Good News..." are not denied either. "Dashboard" has been aptly labeled "Float On 2" for better or worse. Anyone who can't make it through to "Florida" will probably declare that nothing has changed from "Good News...".

For me, Brock's best work to date is studies in the canon "Cat Faces" from his Ugly Casanova release "Sharpen Your Teeth". To a lessor extent this album revisits this application of layered vocals. The call and response and panned vocals add a width to the Modest Mouse sound that can't really be found anywhere else in rock today. However, I think the main strength of this album is how it draws on every previous version of Modest Mouse: there is the intensity of "Tundra/Desert" in "Parting of the Sensory", there is rarely shown sweet side of "Sleepwalking" and Trailer Trash" in "Little Motel". "Parting of the Sensory" seems to share the sonic landscape that made "The Moon & Antarctica" one of the most important albums of this decade, and "Fire it Up" and "Dashboard" take a page from the radio friendly songs found on "Good News...".

Whatever you’re looking for in Modest Mouse, chances are you will find it on this album (save for some of the very early antics). If you want to hate their commercial success and totally bash them for selling out; you will certainly find plenty of fuel to do that in the first ten minutes of this album. If your looking for return to their "glory days" it is here too, it just takes a little more effort. If your looking for a defining statement of what Modest Mouse is or a good introduction to the band, this is album is probably your best bet.

Post-Spring Break Randomness

The last week was a blur of drinking and more drinking. In between the war campaign I waged against my liver, I caught 2 shows. I saw RJD2 and Busdriver at the Variety Playhouse last Tuesday night. In the context of all the awesome shows i've been catching lately it was a little dissapointing. Busdriver is very talented, but the show was not anywhere near amazing. His lyrics were hard to understand most of the time because he was mumbling too much and him and his DJ (who was more using drum machines than turntables) basically whined about the audience reaction (or lack thereof) the entire performance. I know hip-hop artists like to yell at the crowd and try and get them to go crazy, but dissing your crowd between every song is not going to entice the reaction you want. If you're not recieving the ideal reaction from your audience, perhaps you should be more entertaining. RoadKillOvercoat is a good hip-hop album, but this guy is not the Notorious BIG. Go earn a crowd reaction, don't act like it's due to you.

RJD2 came out with a band and was playing guitar and bass and singing and didn't even touch a turntable until the 5 th song. This first portion was interesting as this 4-piece version of RJD2 did their best impression of Ratatat. Then RJD2 himself got behind his turntables and drum machines and turned in a mediocre mixing set. The coolest thing about it was the use of projector. In addition to having random trippy stuff going on, he had a video camera that would show what his hands were doing on certain parts, like playing the drum machine. As his bandmates retuned to stage and they continued to do rock-ish music, the show got seriously boring. I don't mind the concept of a DJ pretending he is a rockstar but the delivery here was lacking to say the least.

The other show I caught last week was Of Montreal at the Grey Eagle in Asheville, NC. A great show in a venue that I didn't really like that much. The band did mostly stuff off of Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer? and was maybe a little shorter show than most of the set lists I've seen. My friend taped the show and I'll have that torrent highlighted as soon as it is up.

The Blood Brothers formed in the Eastside suburbs of Seattle Washington in 1997. Members include Jordan Blilie (vocals), Johnny Whitney (vocals), Morgan Henderson (bass), Cody Votolato (guitar), and Mark Gajadhar (drums). The band has two dedicated vocalists (Jordan Blilie - lead vocals, Johnny Whitney - keyboards, lead vocals). Recent albums have featured a degree of experimental instrumentation: Morgan often deviates from bass to add a second guitar , and also utilizes laptop technology. Johnny has added piano and Wurlitzer organ to many more songs, a process which actually began on "American Vultures" from March on Electric Children. He has claimed he always wanted to incorporate such instruments into the Blood Brothers' sound, but only on signing with a major label prior to ...Burn, Piano Island, Burn did he have the means to do this. - wikipedia

Joanna, I Could Be Your Darling

Dear Ms. Newsom,

For as long as I can remember you have graced my dreams and more recently my CD player. Way before the Milk-Eyed Mender or even the extremely limited not-meant-to-be-sold-or-heard Walnut Whales you have been there, in my thoughts, plucking your harp amidst a circle of imaginary pastel colored bunny rabbits and pixies. Way before this whole New Weird America Freak Folk movement, way before Devendra Banhart could even grow a beard, your splendid voice caressed my soul.

I used to think that this beautiful fairy queen in my mind was no more than an amalgamation of Ferngully fairies and the classical music I once listened to before drifting off to sleep. Then I heard "Peach, Plum, Pear" and the now dwindling feelings for that mythological princess burned once again like a revitalized camp fire. Seeing you live for the first time boldly singing "Yarn and Glue" A cappella to a way too small crowd, I was sure it was you.

Now I know you're really into Bill Callahan (a.k.a. smog) and you guys are probably having a great time touring the country, accompanying him at his shows (I noticed he didn't return the favor), and discussing music. But it's not going to last darling. He's a player. You're just another notch in his $200 vintage leather belt. Cat Power, check, scenester groupies, check, You, check, before you know he'll be in a foursome with Feist, Eleanor Friedberger, and Kevin Barnes. You've learned all you can from him anyhow. Don’t let him hold you back in Baritone Boresville.

You and I will work perfectly together. I'll take care of all the art direction, photography, and music videos as well as tour managing and bodyguard duties. New album needs a classy cover containing magic dancing wisps? I'm on it. Need a press photo of you floating through a never-ending field of petunias? Done. Lame hipster guy won't leave you alone backstage. I'll release the hounds. Or the sharks. Or the hounds with mutated sharks on their backs who have grown opposable thumbs and now wield samurai swords. I'm SO ON it.

Think about it and get back to me.

Live Review and Photos: Explosions In The Sky, The Paper Chase, Eluvium (3-13-2007) Lenny's

It seemed like forever since i had raced down to Criminal Records to scoop up the last 2 tickets for this show. I had no idea who was even opening for Explosions In The Sky until a couple days earlier. Me and Biggie C arrived one minute after the supposed door opening time and were barely able to secure a spot in the front row. Lots of kids with "X"s on their hands were already setup. After The crowd quickly grew behind us, Eluvium came through the audience and climbed on stage right next to me. With all three bands' equipment cluttering the small stage, it seemed to be the only way to get up there. Eluvium's new record, Copia, is really good and I've been jamming it a lot over the last month or two so i was very excited when I learned he was on the bill. Eluvium is the stage name of Seattle's Matthew Cooper. He plays really ambient and distorted music on a keyboard and guitar. His performance was much more "wall-of-sound" than I had expected from the very mellow album, and continued a trend of being way too loud to not have earplugs(I'm stupid, I know i should be wearing earplugs to shows but they are just annoying to me). Looping each instrument into massive sonic waves, it was even better than I expected. The underage kids surrounding us were not impressed but good music taste often takes a while to develop. I'll post some Eluvium tracks next week. Biggie C with some pics of a very dark stage: (click to enlarge)

Shortly after that, The Paper Chase took the stage. i didn't really know anything about these guys, but they were great, and very very loud. I heard one of the kids around me describe them as "jagged noise-pop"(which they obviously found on Wikipedia), and that's them exactly. Front man John Congleton was extremely entertaining between singing great, Jamming some amazing, piercing guitar lines, and dancing around in a really awkward way. The rest of the band was going at it like machines and it was well worth the damage it did to my eardrum. I'll have some songs from these guys next week too: (click to enlarge)

So, for those who don't know, Lenny's has just recently moved to a new building down the street from the old one. I was not a big fan of the move at first because I liked the old, crappy, tiny place and that building has a lot of history (like this DVD I have of Cat Power with Steve Shelley drumming there back in 1995 when it was called Dottie's) But the new place is pretty cool, especially the murals across the wall. That said, it was a very unfavorable location for an Explosions In The Sky show. First, the stage is very short and the EITS dudes are often on the ground playing with their pedal gear so most could not see what was going on. The sound setup and "shotgun" building shape combined with the thick sea of people made for greatly different volumes depending on how far away from the stage. Being lucky enough to be in the very front, my concert experience was quite different than most people I've talked to who also attended the show.

While EITS was setting up, all three of the axe wielders came on stage with an old suitcase containing about 7 pedals each. After setting up, they then laid down the rock. The entire set was pretty much one big crescendo. I really can't remember a show where the music had such a steady building momentum. I remember seeing Mogwai twice last year and thinking it was rather "underwhelming" and kid of wondered if post-rock could really grab you in a live setting and EITS proved that i could. The venue exploded in cheers at the Set's conclusion and after the crowd roared for what i thought was an impressive plea for an encore, One of the guys came out and said they didn't have anything else. Encores sometimes seem so cheesy to me that it doesn't bother me when a band comes and just puts forth the show with no bells or whistles and just kicks ass with pure sound. The way the entire show built up and let loose, I can understand why it would be hard to just throw another song in afterwards. Overall, a great show and i highly recommend you check out EITS when they come back (they said they'd be back in the fall). Hopefully they will play in a venue better suited to them. Just make sure to bring some protection for your ears because all I could hear afterwards was ringing until I passed out.

The New Hottness: The Besnard Lakes

The Besnard Lakes : The Besnard Lakes Are The Dark Horse

This Montreal six-piece centers around husband and wife Jace Lasek and Olga Goreas. Lesak has produced albums for acts such as Wolf Parade and Islands. This second album as The Besnard Lakes contains pieces and parts of countless genres and styles while managing to create a unique sound which is difficult for a band that spans so much. There's a lot of bands that you could reference their sound to, but I'll go ahead and go with a nice mix of the Beach Boys, My Bloody Valentine, Grizzly Bear, Sigur Ros and a little Pink Floyd. Guest appearances on the record include members of The Dears, Stars, and Godspeed You! Black Emperor. Listen for yourself:

Animal Collective Makes the World a More Colorful Place

Animal Collective's "Sweet Road" from their incredible album Sung Tongs is featured in a commercial for Crayola's Color Explosion marker. While many "indie" bands have met backlash for this sort of thing (ahem, Modest Mouse + mini vans), no can really argue with Animal Collective and markers (or crayons). The two seem to go hand-in-hand.

Videos Of The Day: The Autumn Defense, Magik Markers, Eluvium

If you didn't get lucky and score some Explosions In The Sky tickets for tonight like i did, you should totally go beat up a hipster and jack them for their tickets. If you don't want to do that, there's still some great shows to see tonight. Magik Markers are playing at The Drunken Unicorn and The Autumn Defense (featuring members of Wilco) are playing at The Earl. Here's some vids:

Flogging Molly is playing at the Roxy tonight to a sold out crowd, so here's a video:

Courtney Love is being sued for unpaid rehab bills.

Boston lead singer, Brad Delp, died at age 55.

REM guitarist Peter Buck and Screaming Trees drummer Barrett Martin are working together on a project called Tuatara with an album due out in June.

REM is also getting inducted in the Rock 'n' Roll Hall Of Fame and about to work on a new album

In a related note, The Rock 'n Roll Hall Of Fame is consumed in Van Halen controvery. Both seem pretty irrelevant.

Daft Punk and The Rapture are mini-touring the US but not coming to the ATL.

The National will be playing at the Earl on June 13th before doing Bonnaroo.

Aqualung's new album Memory Man comes out tommorrow.

Live Music Blog covered the Langerado Festival in Florida over the weekend. Check it out.

Pitchfork has a good article on Girl Talk about him posing for Playgirl and being involved in congressional debates about copyright laws.

Tickets went on sale today for Pitchfork Music Festival. I'm very intrigued by the ATP "Don't look back" stuff going on Friday night. If Sonic Youth ends up playing Daydream Nation I will be there.

In the glorified frat party that is CJ's landing, Passer By played a great show. Here's some pics from Saturday night I took on my phone:

Liars are working on a new album.

Neurosis have a new song on their myspace page from their forthcoming album due out May 8th.

Unfortunetly we are not covering SXSW this year (we will be there next year), but for coverage, check this out.

Untied States are playing at the Drunken Unicorn tonight. here's a video:

I'm hearing that Tool plays Friday night and Widespread Panic plays Sunday night, but i have no confirmation.

Bonnaroo has released last year's performances from Blackalicious, Buddy Guy, and The Neville Brothers in MP3 and FLAC.

The hippier-than-thou folks who like to hate on Bonnaroo have spread alot of rumors involving MTV and Clear Channel and I'm always surprised how many people actually believe this. Here's straight from guy who runs the roo:

Rumor: Clear Channel is buying out the festival.
AC Says: “Not true.”
Rumor: MTV/Viacom is buying out the festival.
AC Says: “There’s never even been a discussion. What would MTV do with a music festival?”
Rumor: Six Flags wants to build a new theme park on the land where Bonnaroo is held.
AC Says: “[Referencing a recent News Sentinel article], Six Flags over Georgia is in trouble. They’re not buying land; they’re selling land.”
Rumor: Bonnaroo is moving to a different location.
AC Says: “We’re actually exploring options for creating a more permanent site in Coffee County for Bonnaroo. If we owned the land, we could put in more infrastructure that would make it easier to produce. We’ve started tentative discussions with landowners for possibly purchasing the land, but it’s completely speculative at this point.”
Rumor: 2006 was the last Bonnaroo.
AC Says: “At this stage in the game, we’re here to stay for another few years.”

Also, if you want tickets to the 'roo and haven't got them, just keep in mind that only the high priced tickets remain. Last year tickets sold out in May, but remember Coachella sold out in record time, so I'd expect Bonnaroo them to sell out a little earlier this year.

Live Review: Producer Battle at Apache Cafe (3-6-2007)

Last Tuesday night I went to Apache Cafe to watch my friend, JR Christ, compete in the Producer Battle. Every Tuesday night, Apache cafe hosts the weekly World Famous Mic Club night there where MCs can battle each other in freestyle competitions. I've been to these many times and have always had a great time. Now, once a month, instead of the MC battles, they have producer battles and this was the first one I have seen. Dres the Beatnik hosts the event and has a lot to do with the success of this weekly. Sometimes there is a live band featured for the MCs, but this night it was DJ Scissor Hands and some other DJ throwing down records.

The way the producer battle works is each producer brings a bunch of one minute tracks they made. It's done tournament style where two producers go head to head in the best of three rounds. Each round, one producer plays a track, then the other producer plays a track, and afterwards the winner is decided by how loud the crowd cheers for each producer, measured by some device that reads the decibels of loudness that Dres wields. 110 decibels marked the best crowd response. When someone scored in the lower 90s, Dres had a catch phrase: "Good Year, Bad Score".

It's obvious that the producer who goes last tends to have an advantage so coin flips decide who goes first. Watching the battles, there were certain things that gave producers clear advantages. The best tracks had a about a 10 second intro/build up and then would explode with some heavy bass and serious beats making the crowd go wild. Getting Dres into a track and having him dance around on stage clearly helps get crowd approval. JR Christ battled the very first battle and won 2-1. In the semifinal round, he battled a very animated character from the Battery 5 crew (which was highly represented in the battles) who had a dance routine for all of his tracks and had some guy sitting close to the stage playing cheerleader for him. JR Christ battled hard losing the first round, winning the second round, and forcing a tie in the third. In the overtime round, the Battery 5 producer dancing on stage with Dres was too much for JR Christ to overcome, but the battle was clearly the best of the night and much respect was given to both.

The most interesting part of the night came in the MC freestyle battles that occurred between the producers battles. Dres explained in detail before the battles began that MCs were expected to freestyle, not come in with a rap they had already written, and that if they caught an MC using something they already wrote, they would be banned from Apache Cafe for life. About halfway through the night, an MC started a battle with what sounded clearly previously composed to even my ear and suddenly Dres stops the kid. All the lights come on inside the club and Dres makes everyone in the place stand up. A mock court goes in session to determine whether the MC was freestyling or not. First, people from the crowd come up and say why they thought he wasn't freestyling, and if there are 3 good reasons, the MC is in serious trouble. This particular MC got called out on having his rhymes not go along with the music, one girl saw him practicing before he went on, and finally none of his words ever specifically addressed the MC he was battling. With this, the MC had one last chance. He had to freestyle about a subject that the audience came up with and prove he can freestyle. The subject that the audience finally settled on was "underground pigeons with herpes at the waffle house". The MC did a somewhat decent attempt, but the final decision would come with the audience cheers for and against banishment from the club, and the crowd overwhelmingly cheered for him to get kicked out. They took a photo of the kid, and he was promptly showed the door. It was such a surreal experience.

I highly suggest checking out Apache Cafe on a Tuesday night, especially the monthly producer battles. It's nice to see a place where true old school hip-hop is still alive and well. Make sure to bring your blunts.

Live Review: Moe. (3-3-2007) The Tabernacle

This past Saturday, I got some free tix to see moe. from my buddy, Kevin and 91.1 (Ga.Tech radio). I used to be really into moe., as I always thought they were one of the best jam bands out there, and thus, I would never miss a show. It’s been a couple of years now since I’ve seen them, and was pretty excited to see what they had been up to. Well, the story of this show starts in the lot.

Moe. plays at the Tabernacle, here in Atlanta every year, they always book at least 2-3 shows in a row, and are well known for their huge lot parties (full of the usual lot shenanagans). When I arrived (what I thought was) “late” to tailgate and whatnot, I was astonished to see such an empty lot. Wondering where all the fans were, I opened up a beer, sat on the trunk and jammed to a small, hippie, bongo circle. I was instantly distracted as the APD started swarming around the lot. Several regularly dressed folks jumped up and started holding guns to people’s heads all around me. One guy in particular, dressed like he was ready to jam with moe., is holding a gun to a guy’s head and using a taser to restrain (and I emphasize) A STONER WHO IS JUST SITTING ON THE GROUND, and then he takes his empty bag that had previously had weed in it (I think he ate it all or something when the undercover ratgirl sitting with him jumped up and yelled, “he’s got it!” while pointing down at the tased victim). People were getting arrested all over the lot.

As I was completely disgusted by this sudden police revolt, I simply wanted to get inside to ‘safety’. Much to my dismay, walking up to the entrance, I see two more kids getting pulled out of the venue in handcuffs, escorted by cops holding sacks of weed.

Before I get too off the topic here over my extreme disapproval of how my tax dollars were being wasted on harmless citizens… on to the actual review of the music.

OH MY F@#KING GOD, they were still playing the same motherf@#king shows I have seen so many times before. No new tricks, jams, or stage/light production. I felt like I was in an inescapable hell (as I did not drive that night). How in the world do these guys still have such a huge following? One answer to that could be that the crowd surrounding me was definitely much younger (high-schoolers, college freshmen, and the like). But regardless, I still cannot understand this huge fascination of the so-called hippies (who are traditionally the type to thrive for revolution and change and innovative music) for this lame-ass band that has been putting on the same show over and over again for years now. To top it all off, moe. closed out the night with a cover of Blue Oyster Cult’s “Don’t Fear the Reaper.” Yeah……I’ve seen them do that at least 3 times before (and I reiterate, this was over 2 years ago!!!); but, hearing that beginning riff was like sweet relief, because I knew I could finally get the f@#k outta there!

I am so over it.

Last nite local (soon to be national) favorites Gringo Star opened for The Slip. Since my birthday is December 31st I was stoked that The Slip opened with "Children Of December" and played a long set way into the late hours.

Excerpt from "Children of December"

All the parents of the children of December
Have a clutch
'Cause their birthdays are the hardest to remember
When you're born on Christmas
Or the day before new year's
They can sing out your birthday
But but but nobody hears

Friday Free-Style

Mastodon will rock the Tabernacle Saturday May 26th with Against Me! and Cursive. Tickets go on sale tommorrow at 10am . Here's a Cursive Video:

Damien Rice will be at the Tabernacle on May 30th.

The Yeah Yeah Yeahs are working on a new project according to frontwoman Caren O. I've heard rumors that Deerhunter is involved and that is why they cancelled their shows last weekend, but I have no evidence.

Beck's drummer, Matt Sherrod, has joined Crowded House.

The NAACP says that Bono cares about black people.

Some Guns 'n' Roses fan website has shut down in protest to the new album getting delayed. I can't believe there are still GNR fansites.

On the reunion tip, Michael Jackson is trying to put the Jackson 5 back togther.

The hot rumor is that Shea Stadium will be a location for Al Gore's Live Earth concert.

Ben Folds is doing a college campus tour, but is not hitting any in Georgia.

Roger Waters wants to play with the rest of the boys in the Floyd. Come on Dave! He's reaching out dammit!

Riding high on the reunion bandwagon, Genesis is touring the US, but nowhere near here.

Watch Queens Of The Stone Age in the studio working on the new album:

Lightning Bolt are touring the US, minus the south. They're doing a show in New York in two weeks with Marnie Stern. I bet that will be a helluva show.

Joanna Newsom new EP info.

Iron And Wine have a new album due out in September.

Here's a track off of Bright Eyes' new album due out April 10th: No One Would Riot
Bright Eyes will be at the Fox Theater May 18th.

Here's a track off of The Rosebuds' new album due out April 10th: Get Up Get Out
The Rosebuds will be playing with Beach House sunday night at the earl. I can't wait.

West Virginia's All Good Fest has announced their line-up. Notably Rat Dog, Les Claypool, Dark Star Orchestra, and STS9.

Lollapalooza sold some $60 secret tickets yesterday that I tried to get unsuccessfully for like 3 hours. Official tickets go on sale April 4th and the line-up gets revealed afterwards supposedly.

I'm gonna break down the Bonnaroo artist addition and schedule times rumors over the weekend so stay tuned.

Blues Traveler's John Popper got arrested for marijuana.

SXSW is so big, there's a festival in Lousiana that's theme is being a gas station and lodging stop on the way to SXSW. Really good line-up for a spring break stop.

It looks like Tool drummer Danny Carey is cool, and they've rescheduled their tour before Bonnaroo, so the Bonnaroo date looks like it's still on.

Lots 'o interviews:

What The Hell Am I Listening To?!?

Some really good stuff:

Menomena

This Portland 3-piece's Friend And Foe is quickly becoming one of my favourites of the year. Describing this band is difficult for me, a little Clouds Taste Metallic era Flaming Lips, maybe a touch of old school Modest Mouse, maybe a touch of Morphine. I don't know. Give these tracks a listen, and if you like, go get the album because every song on this thing is great.
Buy Menomena : Friend And Foe

Explosions In The Sky

Their new album, All Of A Sudden I Miss Everyone, is a great example of a band that just does their thing, and gets better and better. Many may think that this album sounds very much like most of their others, and that's somewhat true, but some bands just do what they do masterfully, and that's all they need to do. Sometimes a band just doesn't have to head off into another direction (Modest Mouse comes to mind). Give a listen to a great band in their prime:
Buy Explosions In The Sky : All Of A Sudden I Miss Everyone

Do Make Say Think

Another great post-rock album i've been listening to is DMST's You, You're a History In Rust. Part of the Broken Social Scene extended family, these guys are really awesome. Where the new Explosions In The Sky record works to perfect an already "classic" style of post-rock, this album takes alot more liberties and avoids any derivative labels. Enjoy:
Buy Do Make Say Think : You, You're A History In Rust

Final Fantasy

I knew when I did my top 50 List of 2006, that i would miss some albums that deserved to be on it because I had only a limited amount of time and resources. He Poos Clouds is the first one. Final Fantasy (aka Owen Pallett) is a violinist/vocalist who played with Arcade Fire on tour and even did some of the string arrangements on their new album, Neon Bible. This second full album as Final Fantasy is just simply phenonemal. You really need to get this:

Live Review and Photos: Sparklehorse (3-4-07) Variety Playhouse

Last Sunday's Sparklehorse show was short and sweet, like this review. First up (since Deerhunter dropped out) was Jesse Sykes and The Sweet Hereafter. The band was not bad for an opener but not too impressive either. I'm always kind of put off by a name that's "Somebody" and "the other guys' band name". I mean it's one thing when you're a music legend from some other band, but when you're not even the best musician in your band and the band is backing you, well, it just doesn't feel like they're in it for the music.

Sparklehorse came out and rocked hard and concisely. The set contained only a few songs off the latest Dreamt For Light Years In The Belly Of A Mountain(#14 of 2006), but was very entertaining and i just really love this band. The drummer's daughter was dancing around on the stage most of the set and even had her on a piano or something to play during the show. Biggie C got some great photos as per usual: (click to enlarge)

Show Review for the Week

So I was originally asked to do a review about the fantastic Mastodon show we attended last Saturday night at Center Stage Atlanta. This, in combination with the sentiment of a few other nameless colleagues, came to illicit a nasty and ugly reaction from me that I'm sure most music people can relate to; I'll tell my story here.

What was so frustrating about the world (read: the people around me that I discuss music with) getting so excited over Mastodon isn't merely the fact that I have been listening to them (and, it follows, sharing my praise with 'the crew') for the better part of five years.... I can handle the redundancy of an old superstar for me being newly discovered by a friend... It happens to me all the time; there are countless bands whose shocking effect on me were the result of my own negligent listening practices; I didn't even get into Pink Floyd until college, for example. But what frustrates is when people forget that you have been going to Mastodon shows for five years only to have a show like the one at Center Stage finally wake your idiot friends up. The Center Stage performance was great, but not in comparison to Mastodon/Darkest Hour at the Echo Lounge in 2004, or Mastodon/Dillinger Escape Plan at the Masquerade six months later. Yes, I am being a pretentious prick, but yes, I told all you motherfuckers so years ago.... Mastodon is an awesome band and I was sure the Center Stage performance was going to be great before I bought the ticket. My only complaint being that there was no encore for the hometown crowd, but then again, the show was probably full of nubile second and third timers anyway.

My point is, instead of wasting my breath on deaf ears, praising an amazing band like Mastodon like I have been doing to no avail for the last 5 years, I want to review another show I attended this week; Red Sparowes/Kylesa/Irreversible. I missed Irreversible's set, but I wanted to mention them here because I've seen them before; they are a promising local band that fit the bill well; experimental stoner jam metal in the vein of Isis, Sleep, etc. I arrived halfway through Kylesa's set, who were a pleasant surprise to see. The last time I saw Kylesa was at the old Velvet Elvis in Savannah (before it became the Jinx), probably about 7 years ago. They have since added a second drummer, which, while somewhat asinine, was used enough to satisfy my skepticism (read: dueling drum solo, and yes, thats all it takes). The highlight of the set was a cover of Pink Floyd's 'Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun', which droned through 10 minutes of the classic riff. I couldn't help but remind myself that the last time I saw that song played was by Roger Waters itself in September.

Red Sparowes totally took me by surprise. The entire post-rock, post-metal, whatever thing has been pretty faddy lately, it seems everyone is getting their fingers into it. Bands like Mogwai and Explosions in the Sky are successfully maintaining movie soundtrack gigs, and the sound's influence can be seen across a staggering array of genres. Red Sparowes really dig into some of the more cliche characteristics of this sound, but without the trite-ness that can come with the repetitively mountainous song dynamics that post-rock bands are usually guilty of. The band consists of members of Isis, which definately is perceptible in the Red Sparowes' set. I would liken it to Isis with less distortion, better drumming, and more delay pedals. The video show also was interesting by virtue of its existence, although not particularly impressive. I would go as far to say that this show was better than Mogwai at the 40 Watt last year, if it must be compared. I know all of Mogwai's music, so they probably had more working against them; but .... if intensity could be the measure of a post-rock band, the Red Sparowes show wins out; I was more overwhelmed. I still don't know any of their songs, but they made a new fan out of me Thursday night, which is the best thing that can happen for both performer and audience member; the beginning of something beautiful.

Torrent Of The Day: Final Fantasy (2-23-2007)

I have been listening to He Poos Clouds alot lately so here's a very recent live show:

Final Fantasy / 02.23.07 / Tranzac, Toronto, Canada / Flac

Final Fantasy
Tranzac
Toronto, ON
February 23, 2007

Recorded and uploaded by Winter.
Recorded on a Sharp MD using a Sony digital microphone
Recorded from the front, stage centre-right

Transfered using Total Recorder
Normalised and balanced using Sound Forge
Tracks cut using CD Wave (24-bit but saved backwards compatible)
Converted to Flac, tested and fingerprinted using Flac Frontend.

Audio notes:
Levels slightly exceeded levels part way through, they were adjusted on the fly (sample shows this)
The clicks you hear is the artist's foot hitting his pedals.
The vocals are somewhat low in the mix, but that's how they were meant to be. The artists requested such during the show.
Tracks with question marks are new songs. Titles are based on a blurry setlist photo.

1) Blue Imelda?
2) Do You Love
3) Bass Hit?
4) Hey Dad
5) CN Tower Belongs to the Dead
6) Flare Gun?
7) It took 2 years to break your heart
8) Paris 1919
9) This Lamb Sells Condos
10) Song Song Song
11) Lewis Takes Off His Shirt 1
12) Lewis Takes OFf His Shirt 2
13) Arctic Circle
14) Theme from Castlevania
15) This is the Dream of Win and Regine

What The Hell Am I Listening To?!?

Atlanta music edition of "What The Hell":

Moorish Idols: Moorish Idols EP

With these guys it's hard for me to make comparisons because they're sound is very unique, but still contains whispers of an uncountable amount of music. Really, if you enjoy the greater spectrum of rock music there's something here for you. On top of containing 4 stunning songs, the EP packaging kicks ass. Guitarist David Norbery's sketches in the booklet and personalized CD designs per each different EP give this piece of art another dimension. I urge you to pick this up and give it a listen:
You can pick up a copy of this at Criminal Records, at one of their shows that you need to see, or snail mail via their Myspace page

Untied States: Retail Detail

Students of the school of Sonic Youth, Untied States are quietly one of Atlanta's best bands. The more i listen to this album, the more I fall in love with it. If you too enjoy the experience of getting into challenging music, get this and you will not be dissappointed:

Black Lips: Los Valientes Del Mondo Nuevo

Somewhere between Rock 'n Roll, Punk, and something else is where Black Lips rocks faces off. This live album was recorded in some craptastic club in Tijuana, Mexico and through-out the performace the band is virtually fighting the tequilla-crazed audience. If you've seen the Black Lips, you know this is the perfect setting for these guys. A one-of-a-kind live album that you need to buy:

Lollapalooza Rumors Begin: Pearl Jam to Headline?

The Chicago Sun-Times is reporting that Pearl Jam will be headlining the third installment of Lollapalooza v2.0. Right now Perry and Company are not commenting, but they will be releasing their line-up in about a month. Last year Lollapalooza was a lot of fun and I really hope this is true because I will most likely be going back again for this. We'll keep you up to date on any Lollapalooza developments.

Best Of Ohmpark in February 2007:

February began with me dropping my Top 50 Albums of 2006. I got to see Oklahoma's Go Motion rock out at Lenny's and Biggie C took some pictures. I found this badass Modest Mouse documentary that you really need to check out if you haven't. I broke down the Bonnaroo Line-up and you can expect total Bonnaroo coverage between now and throughout the event. Biggie C reported on the latest in the prog-feline scene. He also took some great photos of From Exile body slamming the Masquerade and some sweet shots of Moorish Idols at the 11:11 Teahouse. Leah got some cool pics of Of Montreal last week.

March has a ton of intriguing shows coming up and we will be covering them. We've recently sat down with Passer By for an interview and will be putting that up very soon. Thanks again for checking us out and we hope you stick around.
