It's a big week for shows in Atlanta. First, tonight Sunset Rubdown will be at the Drunken Unicorn. You can listen to some recent live tracks from them here. Arcade Fire and The National will be at the Atlanta Civic Center tommorrow night. Thursday night From Exile will be at the Masquerade. Friday night Blonde Redhead and Annuals will be at the Variety Playhouse. Modest Mouse and Man Man will be at the Masquerade Music Park Saturday night. Here's some tracks to get you in the mood:
Modest Mouse will be here Saturday so here's a show. The Modest Mouse traders are in the process of torrenting every known MM show that exists on Dimeadozen, so you should check it out.
The info file says "Source Unknown." The sound is good, either a SBD or a real good AUD. This show was supposed to be posted last week by a participant in our little Mouse gig postings but hasn't been, so I'll do it. Enjoy and thanks to the original seeders and tapers..

There's a whole bunch of stuff going on in Atlanta this weekend. The Inman Park Festival is always a good time. I'll definitely be checking out the Space Rock Con 2007. Silent Kids, The Preakness, and Mary O. Harrison at Lenny's will be a great Friday night show. No matter what you do this weekend, make sure to record the Henry Rollins Show on IFC tonight because The Mars Volta will be performing some kick ass stuff you can check out here. In fact, you should watch this amazing performance in its 47 minute entirety, Live At the Lowlands (aka one of the best DVD Bootlegs I Own):
Seriously, if you didn't watch that TMV video, you are missing out.
Pitchfork Fest, aka the Best American Festival of the Year, just addedCalifone, The Sea And Cake, Yoko Ono, and some bands i don't recognize. Chicago gets some killer fests.
The awesome Coachella Festival kicks off today. I wish I could have gone because the two I went to before were amazing. The hotel in the desert that I paid to stay in before tickets sold out keeps calling me and it's annoying. I'll be checking out the webcast as you should. I've watched several fests on webcast and they are pretty cool. Remember when you're wasted late night, go to your computer and watch Sonic Youth and Bjork. You won't be disappointed.
Here's a teaser for the Marc Benevento (of the Benevento-Russo Duo) album of his month long run at New York City's Tonic featuring a plethora of other great artists. Check it:
CocoRosie : The Adventures Of Ghosthorse And Stilborn
This album has been pretty much trashed by most of the blogosphere (Pitchfork gave it a 2.3) but I really love it. I don't have a lot of familiarity with their previous albums (although that will soon change) but i really believe that Ghosthorse And Stillborn holds up to almost any record to come out this year. CocoRosie is two sisters doing indie-folk with a little opera and hip-hop thrown in. They both do vocals, and one plays alot of instruments and the other plays experimental percussion instruments like children's learning devices and gold chains. Check it out:
I have been listening to many mediocre albums lately and Guns And Drums has been an exception. This Duluth, Minnesota trio has something really special here and I wish I would have gotten into this band earlier. Stylistically they feel like a stripped down indie rock outfit with very anthemetic songs, or "Slowcore" as they are known, and i will be delving deep into this band's catalog after hearing this great album. Give it a listen:

Live Review, Photos, and Videos: The Books, Todd Reynolds (4-20-07) Variety Playhouse
Review by sleo Photos by BiggieC Video by bobloblaw79
Friday night The Books tour stopped in Atlanta promoting the new tour/online only Play All DVD. The show started out with Todd Reynolds, a masterful violinist with effects pedals and a bass drum. Todd also used a large screen to display many graphics that were developed by a variety of artists. Not only could Todd play a mean violin with twists and turns throughout his elaborate, overlapping melodies, but his use of the pedals and bass drum also added an intriguing element of intensity to his visual effects. My favorite visualization shown by Todd was a portrayal of riding on the British monorail. The artist took footage from the front and back of the train at the same time and displayed each perspective side by side. The journey down the rail was traveled at the same rate of Todd’s violin bow, and quickly became mesmerizing to watch. Todd had also cleverly designed his musical piece around his artist friend’s footage to coincide with the changing directions, speeds, and overlaps of the different angles from which the artist filmed his journey on the rail.
Then The Books took the stage and totally blew me away. It’s not often enough that I get to go to a show that has so much going on in their music and on stage that I can’t even tear my eyes away. The duo also utilized the large screen on stage with several videos that went along perfectly with every song. They showed a wide variety of footage, from creations of simplistic and distorted graphics of the alphabet to old family videos. Nick consistently held the mellow tone of their music with his acoustic guitar, while Paul contributed dramatic melodies on his skeletal cello. Throughout all of their songs, several different samples of voices and music filled in over the acoustic sound of their instruments from what seems like quite an extensive library of sounds. There was not a large turnout for the show, yet the crowd that was there was thoroughly entertained as the sounds of their enthusiasm throughout the entire performance was thunderous. It was additionally nice to be able to chillax and see everything going on with such a friendly and upbeat crowd. Todd Reynolds came out to join the duo for a few of their songs, which made for a more complex and compelling performance. They even did a phenomenal cover of a Nick Drake song from his album Five Leaves Left (which they admitted to having done last year at their performance at the EARL). I had a great time at the show and really can’t wait to see what else these guys can come up with.
Yesterday Pitchfork announced that in addition to Sonic Youth perfroming Daydream Nation at Pitchfork Fest, Slint will be doing their Spiderland and the GZA will be doing Liquid Swords. I'm a Big Wu-tang Clan fan and this is an amazing hip-hop album. The entire clan shows up for this, like most of the '90s solo Wu-Tang stuff, and I'm curious as to how many of the clan will be backing "The Genius" for this special show. If you're not familiar with this record, it is a must have so check it out:

Emusic has surpased 300,000 subscribers. If I bought digital music, that's where i'd get alot of it, but 8-track cassettes just sound so much warmer.
My Morning Jacketwill be performing with the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra at this year's Lollapalooza Festival, taking place in Chicago's Grant Park, August 3-5.
Austin City Limits Festival has tickets on sale now despite not announcing a line-up until mid-May. I'm getting a little bit tired of the sell tickets to a mystery line-up thing.

Now something a little less music and more cerebral; This video was made in 1975 by John Whitney, a pioneer in computer graphics. One of the greatest holidays of the year, April 20th, is upon us and Atlanta celebrates 420 in style. Here's a guide to blazing the day away in Atlanta. Weather is looking pretty good so far:
First, the glass shop 42 Degrees offers discounts on glass pieces every April 20th so a great way to get your day started is to go shopping. Next, there are two big festivals going on in the same area:
Hippies: you can go over to Candler Park and check out the Sweetwater 420 Fest. From 2pm to 11pm enjoy Atlanta brewed beer and hang out with a fellow wooks. The festival is free to attend and boasts a music line-up including Dubconscious, Mad Professor, Captain Soularcat, Squirrelheads, and Neau Hall And The Magnificent 7. I went to the festival 2 years ago and it was very fun and very packed out.
Hipsters: you can go over to the 11:11 Teahouse and check out the Nophest 420 @ 11:11. The festival runs from Friday to Sunday starting at 8pm Friday and Saturday and Sunday. In addition to the small stage inside, there will be an outdoor stage as well. The fest has an extensive line-up of bands and DJs and various performance art. One day passes cost $10 and weekend passes cost $25 and both include free beer.
If you want to get in on the Earth Day community service action, here's what we recommend:
For you "all ages kids", April 20th happens to also be National & Global Youth Service Day (NYSD), the largest volunteer service event in the world. For more info on that, click here.
There are a ton of great shows going on Friday night. The Ohmpark crew is going to be checking out The Booksat the Variety Playhouse we highly recommend you attend.
If you are into 420 Reggae Rockfests, Lenny's is having one Friday night:
LENNY'S (NEW LOCATION!): the green hit (cd release), groove stain, the bastard suns, indofin, bpm, sassparilla the singing gorilla 21+early show 8PM - $7 KNOCKWURST HAPPY HOUR 7PM-8PM(420 REGGAE ROCKFEST!!! Get here early at 7pm for some free snausages! www.lennysbar.com)
Late night if you can't find one of the various house parties celebrating 420 around the city, It's as good a night as any to head to Decatur and drink at the Decatur Social Club. Baring the city run tourist and police trap of Underground Atlanta, Decatur is the only place in the city you can drink at bars until 4am.
If you're such a stoner that you can't get off your couch, the G4 television network is doing 420-themed programming including showing The Big Lebowski. What an awesome movie.
We wish you a fun and safe 420 Weekend and smoke one for us!

The sound in the 8x10 was phenominal that night. They beefed up the house PA system to handle the low frequencies this band generated.
This one did a great job of picking up the lows..........definitely one of my better stealth efforts. The balcony at the old 8x10 was 10 ft away from the stage. If you could get your mics out over it, you got great sound as well as good crowd isolation.
Im interested to know what you think.......I cant believe it was almost nine years ago!
cheers- Mike

Ok, so the Lollapalooza site still hasn't updated itself with all of the line-up, but everyone is reporting it as:
Pearl Jam, Daft Punk, Ben Harper & the Innocent Criminals, Muse, Iggy & the Stooges, Modest Mouse, Interpol, My Morning Jacket, Satellite Party, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Snow Patrol, the Roots, Patti Smith, Kings of Leon, the Black Keys, Regina Spektor, Spoon, Lupe Fiasco, TV on the Radio, Pete Yorn, G. Love & Special Sauce, Paolo Nutini, Amy Winehouse, LCD Soundsystem, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Silverchair, Femi Kuti, Yo La Tengo, the Hold Steady, Jack's Mannequin, Stephen Marley, Sound Tribe Sector 9, M.I.A., Slightly Stoopid, Blonde Redhead, Sparklehorse, Sean Lennon, !!!, Blue October, Son Volt, Motion City Soundtrack, Polyphonic Spree, Peter Bjorn & John, Silversun Pickups, CSS, the Rapture, the Wailers, Roky Erickson, Tapes n Tapes, Heartless Bastards, the View, the Cribs, the Fratellis, Ghostland Observatory, Tokyo Police Club, Rhymefest, Soulive, Cold War Kids, Annuals, Fields, Electric Six, Jim Noir, Elvis Perkins in Dearland, Sam Roberts Band, Black Angels, Charlie Musselwhite, Aqueduct, Juliette & the Licks, Dios, Viva Voce, David Vandervelde, Los Campesinos!, Chin Up Chin Up, Ryan Shaw, Colour Revolt, Satin Peaches, Illinois, Arckid, Mickey Avalon, The 1900s, Bang Bang Bang, Bound Stems, High Class Elite, Carey Ott, Matt Roan.
Daft Punk:
Iggy And The Stooges:
!!!:
Peter Bjorn And John:
So, now it is time to break it down and decide whether I'm going to travel to it again this year. First, The bands that I have not seen yet but want to really bad include: Daft Punk, Iggy And The Stooges, !!!, TV On The Radio (I won't be able to catch the shows tonight or tomorrow), and Peter Bjorn And John. Bands that I've seen multiple times but I will still travel to see include Pearl Jam and Yo La Tengo. Bands I want to see and haven't yet, but wouldn't necessarily convince me to travel to see include Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Black Keys, Amy Winehouse, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Son Volt, Silversun Pickups, The Rapture, Tapes n Tapes, Annuals, and Illinois.
The big decision all depends on The Smashing Pumpkins and Virgin Festival in Maryland the same weekend. Seeing the Smashing Pumpkins is a big priority for me this year, and so far the only US dates they have are Virgin Fest and Live Earth (and I'm not going to Live Earth). I think i will wait a little while for Virgin Fest to announce its line-up, but I'm leaning towards Lollapalooza for 2 reasons:
1. There is no doubt in my mind that The Smashing Pumpkins will do a plethora of US dates. Billy Corgan is trying to hype this thing up as much as possible with the album drop weirdness, being so mysterious about the Pumpkins tour line-up, and I think he is purposefully not announcing US dates yet to get people to want them to more and create more hype.
2. Besides SP, i doubt that Virgin will be able to deliver a better line-up than Lolla. That line-up there is pretty deep, and if Virgin is going to exclude most if not all of those acts, i just don't see how it could be much better. Here's the mini-line up of the two Canadian versions of Virgin Fest: Vancouver and Toronto. Other than Bjork, who will definitely not be in Maryland, those line-ups are way too commercial radio and small.
Another thing is i am kinda put off by deciding to compete head-to-head with such a great, already established festival. When Music Midtown in Atlanta tried to go head-to-head with Bonnaroo, how did that work out?
So, my final decision is Virgin Fest has about a week or two to put their cards on the table, and if not, I'm heading to see Perry and Company again.
A Weekend In The A (featuring Sebadoh, Snowden, From Exile, Tenth To The Moon, Lid Emba)
Last weekend I tried to hit up as many different shows as possible. First, i went and checked out the Snowden and Selmanaires show at Rob's House (Records). Rob's House was just some dude's house in East Atlanta. They had a keg for people to drink and a tiny basement where the bands played to a tightly packed crowd of 30-50. The show time said 3pm, but i got there at 5pm and was still able to catch the end of The Selmanaires set. Snowden played next and rocked the basement out. I really like the idea of taking a typical keg party, adding some great bands and doing it early in the afternoon. Good stuff.
Snowden in Rob's Basement
After hitting some bars up and taking a smoke break at my house to listen to an album or two, i headed to the Earl to catch the Jupiter Watts show. i stayed for an hour and pretty sure i didn't see the Jupiter Watts but was way too drunk at this point to concentrate on doing a good review, so I'll have to come and see them again. I made it back to my neighborhood and hung out with the boys in From Exile late night as they did a mini-acoustic set:
In May, From Exile is going on tour on the east coast and Ohmpark will be taking it on the road with them chronicling this journey. We will have more details on that as soon as the tour is completely booked, but it is going to be a fiasco and I hope our non-ATL readers will come check them out. They just purchased an old prisoner transport van for the trip:
On Sunday i finally got a chance to check out the ISP Space. I have to say that i like it. It is very small, but the concept and the vibe are great. I had no idea who any of the bands playing were before i went, but i was very impressed with two of them. Lid Emba is Sean Moore playing on drum machines, a drum set, and a synth. Really cool ambient, noise, experimental electronic stuff. He closed with a really interesting mash-up/reinterpretation of Black Sabbath's War Pigs, and despite being one of the most over-covered songs of all time, it was still stunning. I got a copy of his debut album, Reason Isn't Radar, and after an initial listen, I really like it.
Next up was Tenth To The Moon. This three piece consisted of two older gentleman on bass and keys, and some crazy kid fronting the band switching around from vocals, to drums, to drum machines. I guess on a broad scale I would call it experimental noise-dance. At one point the vocalist pulls out a huge metal shield that is plugged into the sound system that he beats to death with his drum sticks. Really good music and a very entertaining live show that you should check out.
I finally made my way over to Sebadoh at the Variety Playhouse just in time for Lou and the boys to come on. I'm not very familiar with Sebadoh, but they were really good. An enjoyable relic of the '90s. I have to say I enjoyed seeing Lou Barlow solo or Dinosaur Jr much more, but it was cool to see another manifestation.
Kurt Vonnegut dies at age 84. I don't usually get too into celebrity deaths and such, but Kurt Vonnegut was a amazing writer, a true life champion, and a hero to a "countercultre kid" like me. Cheers to you sir!
I know it seems I post something Of Montreal related every week, but they are rad. I'll try to make this my last for a while and pack in some info. Cable And Tweed has a bunch of posts on them this week related to the karaoke show, complete with mp3 highlights, and the 411 on Fo Montreal. Tonight you can catch them on the Conan O'Brien show so set your DVRs. Pitchfork called Kevin Barnes' celly and discussed the dilly. Finally, Bobloblaw79 caught this Led Zeppelin cover at the 2-24-2007 show at the Variety Playhouse:
One thing you might not know about me is that The Grateful Dead is one of my favourite all-time bands. Despite inventing an entire genre of imitators, there's still nothing like this group. If you aren't very familiar with these guys you should download this show, get really baked, and jam it:

Live Review And Photos: Ratatat, 120 Days, Despot (4-10-07) The Loft
Last night, my Ohmpark buddies and I went to the best show I have seen yet at The Loft in Atlanta: Ratatat and 120 Days. Sugarkane dropped this band on me only a few weeks ago, and I have been trying to catch up. I found the crowd at the show to be an uncommon mix of indie hipsters and video-game styled music enthusiasts. I blame this on the venue's proximity to Georgia Tech; perhaps one of the only 'subculture' groups in the city with as healthy an addiction to Internet celebrity and fanfare as the indie crowd. Those 'old-wave' synths and lo-fi sine waves really get those pencil pushers moving...
Ratatat pull an interesting array of fans together by using their old-school aesthetic to drive their rock star image and still somehow bring a heavy dose of hip-hop into their music. Personally, I love their take on some of the popular trends in music happening today; one being the http://www.8bitpeoples.com type synths. The other, of course, is the pervasive influence of hip-hop culture and how it has become an increasingly central part of mass entertainment culture through the Internet. Ratatat accomplishes a unique intersection of subcultures and styles without becoming confusing or undefined; they have a defined sound.
I had the hardest time explaining to my friend what made Ratatat better than other bands that have latched onto the 8-bit-synth trend/aesthetic (depends how much you scoff/respect it). I hate to say this, but it was the same thing that birthed rock into the mythic proportions it was to consume: the guitar. It makes the entire live show for a band that's noise-space is 75% synthetic. Other bands have attempted this approach ( http://www.myspace.com/anamanaguchi to a further degree, for example), but not quite to the sweet spot of trendiness that Ratatat has found....
I should also mention 120 Days, who put on a great opening set. Probably pretty disappointed with American crowds; piles of guitar effects strung up with the analog synths proved these guys could play the trendiest dance club as easily as a a rock and roll dive. I was very impressed and ran home to check them out; I think most of the crowd was surprised.
Note from BiggieC: Ichuda got to the show after Despot was on. I personally enjoyed him very much. I was stoked to see he could rap without a hype man or DJ. His best song was "Get Rich or Try Dying."
Also I'd like to thank Catherine for granting me a photo pass.

This French band kinda has elements of Sigur Ros, Explosions In the Sky, Mew, Radiohead, and some other stuff. Seriously, it's an amazing hybrid of great styles. Their new album, Sweet Beliefs, is stunningly gorgeous and a great "take-you-on-a-sonic-journey" album. Pick yourself up a copy:
This Brazillian born, Uk bred DJ does jazzy IDM and DMB that could border into post-rock in sound. Typically known for great sampling, Amon Tobin incorporates mostly in the field recordings such as cats eating rats and ants eating grass(WTF) on this album. He seems to be worried that illegal file sharing could be hurting his album sales so if you like the tracks, support him and get the album cuz it is worth it:
Al Gore's Live Earth, the environmental verison of Live 8, has announced its headliners. It will be held in different major world cities simultaneously on July 7th of this year (the same day the Smashing Pumpkins drop their new album). Hopefully MTV will do more brilliant coverage of the event (like when they didn't show all of the Pink Floyd reunion). Much like Live 8 ended poverty, these are the musicians that will reverse global warming with music at Giants Stadium in New Jersey:
Kanye West AFI Kelly Clarkston Akon KC Tunstall Alicia Keys Ludacris Bon Jovi Sheryl Crow Melissa Etheridge Dave Mathews Band Rihanna Fall Out Boy Roger Waters Smashing Pumpkins John Mayer The Police
I have to say it makes me cringe to see Roger Waters and Smashing Pumpkins on the same bill as Kelly Clarkston and Fall Out Boy. Notable acts at the London Live Earth include Beastie Boys, Bloc Party, Foo Fighters, Genesis, and Red Hot Chili Peppers. If you are interested in cutting global CO2 emmissions and are a die hard Bon Jovi fan you can get tickets Monday morning here.

Live Videos and Review: Menomena, The N.E.C., Midwives (4-3-2007) Drunken Unicorn
Tuesday night I arrived at the Drunken Unicorn at 8:15pm because I thought I read somewhere that doors opened at 8pm. Well, they didn't end opening until about 9:20pm. I spent a good hour at the coffee shop next door playing Super Mario Brothers on the DS and then went in with the large crowd of folks waiting to be let in. First band up was Jeffrey Butzer's Midwives. They came out in masks and and matching suits like a classic ska/surf outfit and then did some fantastic surf rock. I've been getting into this genre a lot lately going back and listening to old stuff so it was great to hear a band doing that style so well. They even had a tiny piano for like kids that they would play on some songs. Really cool:
Next up was this band called the N.E.C. It includes members of Kill Gordon and Snowden's Jordan Jefferes. I like both of those bands but I was disappointed with this project. They sounded like the a watered-down version of the Black Lips with less intensity and less of an edge. It wasn't necessarily bad, but it just felt too much like a cheap ripoff. Near the end, some kids in the crowd came on stage hitting some of the band with vegetables and it just came off very contrived and out of place. Due to Snowden blowing up and Jordan Jefferes not having much extra time, he has left the band since this show and the N.E.C. will continue on as a three-piece:
I had been listening to Menomena's new album all the time lately and I was very excited about the show. I was not let down. Most of the set included songs off of Friend And Foe and they played them beautifully. They made use of an extensive instrumentation for a three-piece including an e-Bow and a Moog Taurus. There's something special about a band where everyone can take on vocal duties and shine. They seemed very appreciative of the crowd response and recalled bad previous trips to Atlanta while talking a lot of smack about Smith's Old Bar. You could tell that they were loving the crowd and were utilizing the energy well. If you have not looked into this band, do so because their album is one of the best to come out this year and they put on a hell of a show. My friend Bobloblaw79 took some videos:

Notes from pjnola24: I don't know if this is a PRE-FM SBD or an FM Broadcast show. The Hard to Imagine Website claims that this show is available only as FM Broadcast. This is probably accurate; however it seems that the sound quality is just as good as some PRE-FM SBD shows that I've heard. The left/right separation on the guitars is fairly good and the clarity and separation of the individual instruments is pretty good as well.
Also note, that this IS the complete show. Pearl Jam was apparently an opening band for Alice and Chains and Soundgarden for this particular show.

In case you don't know, early bird tickets are currently available for the fest right now at $165 (no service or shipping charge is cool though). The Line-up will be announced on Thursday but we've already been reporting confirmations as they happen on the Lollapalooza message board. Here's a handful more of confirmations and the evidence of that confirmation:
Live Music Blog is reporting that another Chicago fest, Intonation Fest, is not happening this year due to too much festival competition. Pretty lame considering Jon Brion was going to curate it. I guess I'll only be going to Chicago twice this year. As soon as Lollapalooza drops the official line-up, we'll break it down. Remember, ticket prices are gonna go up, so snag them tickets quick.
Late edition because I got uber-drunk last night dancing like a fool at East Side Lounge. I highly recommend you go there on a Thursday night and check out the Rare Form DJ Crew. Saturday night I'll be checking out the Jupiter Watts CD Release show at the Earl. Cable And Tweed has a good article on them complete with mp3s.
Sebadoh is at the Variety Playhouse Sunday night. Read up.
Seattle's September festival Bumbershoot has announced a partial line-up including The Shins and The Wu-tang Clan. I have to say compared to the ba-jillion other festival line-ups this year its pretty weak.

The night after St. Patrick's Day a couple weeks ago, Me, Ichuda, and some other friends spent the night getting drunk in a dive bar on the beach at Tybee Island. We ended up getting in like a 5 hour discussion and argument about Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd. I'm not going to rehash this tired debate here, but I am going to address a single element of the argument that has come out in previous music debates. There are certain phrases that people use when trying to make a point about particular music that always bother me. A simple example of this is: "Every *Insert artist or genre here* song sounds the same". When I hear someone make an argument like this, It translates into my head as "I don't know what I'm talking about". The phrase that came up in this argument that I've heard in similar arguments with many different people was "*Insert band or artist here* are/is a great songwriter(s), but not (a) good musician(s)."
I hate when someone says something like this. It really infuriates me because there are a lot of layers to this sort of thinking that I disagree with. First, somehow the word "musician" has come to mean something different to people than its actual definiton. Certain people in this mind frame think that there is a black and white dichotomy between being a song-writer and being a musician. Either you are songwriter, a musician, or both. Not only is this oversimplification lack an understanding of the evolution of music, but it totally redefines the word "musician" to only account for those who can play an instrument technically proficient according to conventional norms determined by some popular thought based in tradition. It basically boils down to, the faster you can play a scale, the better a musician you are.
Now, I do not disagree that in assessing how good a musician someone is, its fair to take into account how technically proficient that person is. But that is only a part of the greater picture. These classical-rock fundamentalists rob the word of every other meaning and dimension it possesses. Here's some definitions of the word 'musician' that i can find on the web:
Answers.com:
One who composes, conducts, or performs music, especially instrumental music.
Websters-online-dictionary.org:
1. Someone who plays a musical instrument (as a profession).
2. Artist who composes or conducts music as a profession.
But I think I like Wikipedia's best:
A musician is a person who plays or composes music Musicians can be classified by their role in creating or performing music:
You will notice that by definition, song-writing is musicianship. The song-writer is not a separate sphere outside of the musician, but one flavor of musician. You'll also notice that "conducting" is included in all three definitions. A conductor doesn't even actually make any music or sounds, but it still considered a musician. The conductor manipulates the music using the musicians as his instrument. Music is making art with sound. You have to think on that raw, fundamental level to really understand what a musician is. To better illuminate my perspective on these two types of musicians and their importance I think in terms of comic books, The song-writer is the penciller and the technically proficient are the inker. The song-writer creates art and the technically proficient perfect it but there's lots of different dimensions, and variations, and combinations. So arguing about who is a better musician between some who is purely a song-writer and someone who is purely a master of their instrument is impossible on a certain level. That's not to say that value judgements don't exist. The musician who can combine both as well as each of those clearly is a better musician.
Another problem with this argument is the limited conception of what passes for being a master of an instrument. There are classical musicians who believe that jazz and blues and rock 'n' roll aren't "real music" and that musicians in those genres are not as good as classical musicians because they don't do specifically what they are used to. Assuming that particular styles are objectively better than others is something that i will never agree with. As music evolves, styles evolve and just because a particular guitarist hasn't been practicing a particular old style of music over and over again does not necessarily mean they are any less proficient at their instrument. They may be inventing a new style of playing the guitar that the rock dinosaur guitarists could never do. Also, as technology is moving more and more rapidly, what constitutes an "instrument" is changing and a particular musician doesn't have to even touch classical instrumentation. Mastering making music from a computer is just as important as mastering music on a drum set.
The best way i can illustrate how i conceive what makes a great musician is to give an example. I consider Jim O'Rourke one of the greatest musicians of all time because he can play any instrument as good as the best and each with a distinct sound unmatchable, he can write brilliant songs, some of the best lyrics I've ever heard, he has a good and distinct voice, he can improvise at high levels, he has created some of the best pop songs and some of the most challenging and innovative experimental music I have ever heard, he has produced some of the best albums of the last decade, he mixes, he collaborates constantly with great musicians, and he is insanely prolific. The truly great musician to me is the one than can master as many different dimensions of music as possible.
So, I'm taking "musician" back. The next time someone is going on and on about some dude who can shred on a guitar in his sleep but couldn't write a good song, tell your friend "yeah, he's really good at his instrument, but he's not a good musician." and wait for that reaction.
Your reward for reading all of that garbage is a few Jim O'Rourke tracks:

This video is kinda old. (like SO last year ya NOOB) Anyway it should get you ready for this year's Pitchfork Music Festival who just added New Pornographers, Battles, Stephen Malkmus, The Ponys, and De La Soul. Tickets are only $50 for the weekend that includes Friday nite's performance of "Daydream Nation" by Sonic Youth. You'd be crazy not to go.

Comments: Easily the most "rocking" Decemberists show I've ever seen or heard. Colin says early in the show that Chris Funk (the band's guitarist) made up the setlist for the show. They played The Crane Wife part 1 only, which was interesting (and better than linking it with part 2). We got to hear the live debut of a b-side from The Crane Wife, a song that is MUCH better live than the studio version: The Perfect Crime #1. Also, an encore of The Tain was a nice surprise (though I would have liked one more album song to close the show). The in-crowd entertainment was a re-enactment of the battle of Gettysburg instead of the Charge of the Light Brigade (especially nice to hear the guy behind me cheer loudly when Colin says the Confederates had won the battle). A fan got up on stage during O Valencia to sing backup and play a percussive noise maker. After the show I got to shake hands with John, the drummer, and say hi to Jenny, the keyboard/accordion player, as I walked through the building towards my car. It was a great show. Now, the sound in a college gym is terrible. The mix was also a bit light on Colin's vocals in my opinion. For some reason I ended up with a lot of static in the left channel, so a bunch of songs have the right channel doubled to avoid the digi-noise from the left mic. There is more crowd than I'd like in the recording too, but that's what you're going to get when people talk and shout requests through the whole show. Overall, with the volume boost I think it's a very solid recording for the given conditions. Please share freely and only in lossless formats. Questions/Comments: subpop12@hotmail.com

Live Review: DJ Klever, Snowden, Variac (3-31-07) Lenny's (Plus, The Ohmpark Kenny Crucial Challenge)
Saturday night while Biggie C and Sleo went to the Ted Leo show, I decided to play the hipster and go to Lenny's. After grabbing some food and watching the first half of the Florida v. UCLA Final Four basketball game in Little Five Points I journeyed alone to the show. When I got there the place was very empty, but was packed tight by the end of Snowden's set. The hipster bicycle club Faster Mustache was celebrating its second birthday and everyone who's anyone in the Atlanta indie scene was in attendance including Bean Summer (Lenny's booking agent), Preston Craig (KissAtlanta and Decatur Social Club), and Kenny Crucial. Ok, we're going to stop the story here for a minute to talk about Kenny Crucial.
Last year at Bonnaroo, Sleo and I waited 6 hours to have a good spot for the Radiohead show. About midway through sitting and standing in a packed crowd, this guy is trying to squeeze past us and Sleo starts yelling at him. Apparently some other folks were holding his spot in front of us , and we eventually let him pass. Now I could go on a digression about concert attendee etiquette, but I'll spare you. After we got back to Atlanta, we started to notice the same guy that cut in front of us at almost all of the shows we were going to. We even developed nicknames for him. Just a couple weeks ago, Creative Loafing here in Atlanta ran a cover story devoted to this same guy. He goes by the name "Kenny Crucial" and you can learn more about this "local legend" and "Philosopher" at his own site. Well, now the Atlanta scene is consumed with Kenny-Crucial-Mania. Even Atlanta Music Guide, who is always like 3 years behind the trends, has an article about him. So, I'm going to bite. We here at Ohmpark will feed into the hype and have some fun with this.
Another weird personality I met this year while hitting fests was Beatle Bob. Beatle Bob looks like a retarded Gallagher Brother( ok, a more retarded Gallagher Brother) and i first saw him at Wakarusa last year at the Camper Van Beethoven/Cracker show on stage dancing around in a really strange and ridiculous way. I later talked to him briefly at Bonnaroo and saw him go on stage and introduce both Sonic Youth and Sleater-Kinney at Lollapalooza. There are many mythical stories about Beatle Bob such as the fact that he has supposedly gone to a show every day since 1996 and disputed claims that he was a radio DJ in St. Louis (his hometown). He is known nationally , has a dance named after him, somebody is making a documentary about him and there is even a petition to have him stop being such a spectacle called Beatle Bob Sit Down.
So, here's the deal. St. Louis can suck it. We're going to try and make Atlanta's own Kenny Crucial bigger than Beatle Bob. It's going to be a difficult endeavor because Beatle Bob is very big. We are going to undertake a multi-phase plan. Phase one: We are announcing the Ohmpark Kenny Crucial Challenge. KC needs even more exposure. He needs full coverage. So, from here on out we are challenging you, the reader, to catch Kenny Crucial at shows with your camera phone. You can send your pics to icaughtkenny@ohmpark.com or just post them at Camura if you have an account. We will post the best phone logs here and keep up with the adventures of The Crucial One. After a yet-to-be-determined time, we will award the photographer of the best Kenny Crucial pic some concert tickets to a band they like. Most likely. So, be on the look-out. He is usually at the front of the most hipsterish show of the night. Here's a pic to help you find him, but it's not hard:
Good luck!
ok, what was i writing about? Oh yeah, the show. First I saw Variac and they were ok. Kinda sounded like a sloppy mix of Blur and the Black Crowes. They aren't bad at what they do, it is just what they do is kind of boring and derivative. After a tri-cycle race inside the venue was held, Snowden went on. I had never seen Snowden, but they have been hyped pretty heavily lately and some believe they could be the Nirvana that breaks the Atlanta scene through. I listened to their music and I always thought it was good, but I just didn't understand why everyone was so in love with them. Well, after seeing them live, now I know. They take that Bloc Party intensity and amplify it ten fold. They are the anti-Interpol in that way. I highly recommend you check them out live because it was amazing. I don't know that they can single-handedly blow up the Atlanta scene, but they a great band:
Next up was DJ Klever. This was my first time seeing him as well and it was off the chain. I hadn't seen a crowd in a club dance that hard since I was a raver. He led off with a Tomahawk Chop anthem with a beat and it then went all over the place. Just an amazing DJ. I mean, he is an international superstar and rightly so. I'll be catching him and Snowden every chance i get:
Klever is touring with the Gza and they will be doing Atlanta on May 28th at the Loft. Snowden are playing with the Selmanaires on April 7th at Rob's House.

A quarter of 2007 is over and it was a lot of fun. So far, 2007 is turning out to be a great year in music delivering stellar albums, great shows, and an unprecedented amount of good American music festivals shaping up. I've noticed some interesting trends. For instance, In 2005 it was looking like Arcade Fire and Bloc Party we're going to ascend to greatness and that Modest Mouse had lost everything good about it. One respective album from each band later, Arcade Fire and Bloc Party don't feel so much better than the rest of the pack(although that could easily change) and I can't think of a bigger, better, more important American band in the last 13 years than Modest Mouse.
Sleodid a review of one of the moe. shows in Atlanta. I did a write-up on the Producer Battles at Apache Cafe's World Famous Mic Club. Biggie C got some shots at the Beach House and Birds Of Avalon show:
