Photos: Band Together: A Benefit For Refugee Family Services ft. Morning State, Mack Messiah, The Pendletons, Preston Craig, Delta Company @ The Earl

Wednesday night people from around the Atlanta community gathered to raise money and awareness for Refugee Family Services. Sorry to Delta Company for not getting photos because the first time I got to the earl that night I forgot my camera battery and had to run home to get it. Shout out to Preston Craig for playing in between sets. Thanks to Alex, Julie, and all the other people from Refugee Family services for putting this great event together.

Road Trippin'

I spent my Thanksgiving holiday down in St. George Island, Florida and decided for my drive down I would catch up on my 2007 releases and listen to nothing but albums I haven't listened to. The first album I popped in was Aceyalone's new Lightning Strikes. i had really enjoyed some of his older stuff, but on my first listen of this one, i thought is very under par. Hip-hop is a style I truly love, but it is so hard for me to find stuff that i really dig these days. I'm guessing I just don't have the right exposure to the good stuff, but there has been very little this year that has floored me and that makes me sad.

Next up was the new M83 album, Digital Shades (Vol. 1). I thought it was pretty good, but I don't think it comes anywhere close to Before The Dawn Heals Us. The biggest difference i think between the two is this album seems less aggressive and engaging, but rather hangs around in their more ambient, trancey texture stuff, which is still great. I think this would be an excellent come down album after a really crazy night of drugs.

M83 : My Own Strange Path

The next jam was Polytechnic's debut album Down Til Dawn. This band sounds to me like a mix between early Rolling Stones and The Sea And Cake. It was a pretty solid listen all the way through but not an album that is going to blow your mind.

Polytechnic : Running Out Of Ideas

I had been hearing some noise about 65daysofstatic and finally checked out their new album, The Destruction Of Small Ideas. Upon my first listen, I was really into it and enjoyed it thoroughly. The band does post-rock suped up with strong classical technique and much more range than I've come to expect from this genre. This will probably end up being one of the better post-rock albums of this year.

65daysofstatic : Wax Futures

Next up was Dan Deacon's Spiderman Of The Rings, which had been on my list to listen to for way too long. His experimental electronic stuff is suberb and I highly recommend checking him out if you haven't. I'll be blasting this album non-stop for a while and am excited to see him in Atlanta early next year.

Dan Deacon : Wham City

As I cruised through some back roads between Valdosta and Tallahassee I put in the new God Is An Astonaut, Far From Refuge. Unfortunately I missed this post-rock three piece at Echo Project, but everyone who went to see them said they were really good, so I've been diving into them lately. The album is a solid release for the genre that I enjoyed immensely, but it doesn't really bring anything new to the table.

God Is An Astronaut : Grace Descending

Finally, I finished the journey off with what was probably the most enjoyable listen of the trip, current Wilco guitarist/badass Nels Cline's Draw Breath. If you were a little disappointed with the lack of adventurousness on Sky Blue Sky, this experimental jazz album is right up your alley featuring his instrumental trio called the Nels Cline Singers.

The End Is Near

As 2007 draws to a close, I've been reflecting a tad bit. Last year about this time, I decided to spend most of december listening to as many 2006 albums as possible and making my own top 50 list, and that eventually lead to me starting this blog. I've already begun working on my 2007 top 50 list and i want it to be a compehensive as possible. As much time and effort as I ty to put in to listening to everything, I'm sure there are plenty of albums I miss, so if you, the reader, have anything you've been really into that we may have missed or think deserves making our best 0f 2007 lists, let us know and hip us to it (just post it in the coments). Hope you had a great Thanksgiving and stay tuned to our holiday season blogging!

Deerhunter News

If you haven't already heard, Deerhunter are going to be on hiatus for an undisclosed amount of time. This is all according to a post by Bradford Cox on their blog. I'll repost the letter below for you:

Goodbye 21st Century

So we have one show left tomorrow night in Leipzig, Germany. Then we drive through the night to Prague where we fly home from early in the morning. This tour has been really insane. We met a lot of amazing people and finally got to play the UK, making our debut at the forum even. We are totally grateful for the opportunity to play everywhere we did. When we started this band years ago we never imagined playing outside of Atlanta, so this has all been like a hallucination. We are all exhausted now and ready to be home. I would like to announce that the show we are playing at Primavera in Barcelona (I hope to god i spelled that right) will be our last for quite some time. It will also be the last time we are ever playing the Cryptograms set we have been playing for the last two years. After that the band are going on hiatus. We all need some time to organize our lives. Thanks to everyone who has helped us out. This has been a crazy year that I will always remember.

Love,
Bradford

P.S. we will still post stuff on here but probably not just as regularly and you can pretty much rest assured it will be solo stuff and not deerhunter, so if you are one of those people who are like, "why doesn't bradford start his own blog", delete your bookmark. deerhunter is sleeping now.

P.P.S. I miss my mom and dad making me go to church when i was a kid.

P.P.P.S. everyone should absolutley check out adam and greg's amazing ambient new age blog.

**More Deerhunter News**

The guys just had a set posted on Daytrotter.com mostly full of songs that I am not familiar with except for Heatherwood off of the Flourescent Grey EP and Dr. Glass from Cryptograms. If you aren't already familiar with Daytrotter, all of the tracks are available for free download right off that page.

Also... Below is some video coverage that Bradford did for MTV while at CMJ Music Marathon last month in NYC:

What The Hell Am I Listening To?!?

Grizzly Bear

It's rare that one album turns me into a die-hard fan of a band, but Grizzly Bear's Yellow House from last year is one of those albums. The easiest tell-tale sign of how good music is to me is how many times I can listen to something without it getting stale, and when it is really great, it gets better with more listens. I'm still not sick of Yellow House, but now with their newest release, the Friend EP, i have even more to obsess about. As much as i love this new release, it would be hard for me to suggest it to someone who hasn't listened to Yellow House or seen them live, because Friend is all about re-interpreting themselves, both by Grizzly Bear and a cast of other great young musicians, and so the coolest things on here are best in the context of knowing them well. My advice to you is go listen to Yellow House about ten times if you haven't, and if you can stop listening to it, then go get Friend.

Division Day

A great album I just discovered recently is Beartrap Island. This first full-length release from California's Division Day, who have been a band since 2001, is one of those albums that are wholly accessible (I wouldn't be surprised if 99X was playing it in their rotation right now) but also contains a vast amount of lyrical and musical depth. The sound kind of reminds me of The Stills' Logic Will Break Your Heart but with much more sonic diversity. Taking pessimistic and dark ideas and applying those to upbeat and pretty music is a flavor i'm very fond of and Division Day do it well.

Videos of the Day

Ron Jarzombek is an impressive guitar player. I am listening to his new band, Blotted Science's new cd, The Machinations of Dementia. There is some amazing playing and song construction, with Alex Webster of Cannibal Corpse on bass and Charlie Zeleny of Behold! The Arctopus on drums. The last two tracks can be described as a 'musical palindrome'.

Live Review: Aesop Rock, Black Moth Super Rainbow, DJ Signify & Blockhead 11/12/07 Baton Rouge, LA

On Monday night Aesop Rock made his way to a small club in Baton Rouge called the Spanish Moon. I had been looking forward to this show for quite a while but not because of Aesop Rock. I was more interested in seeing the psychedelic electro-pop outfit Black Moth Super Rainbow who toured with the Flaming Lips recently. Their new album Dandelion Gum is one of my favorite albums of 2007.

DJ Signify and Blockhead had already taken the stage by the time I had arrived, but even before I got there I had been notified via text message that "they're tight as fuck" and that I had already missed a good Rakim mix-up. The short portion I heard (about 15-20 minutes) was jam packed with up beat hip-hop including a Big Daddy Kane mix-up. The set was different sounding than most DJ sets I've heard. They didn't do much scratching but they did cut up and mix a lot of different songs that you wouldn't expect to go together. It was a great way to get a mostly hip-hop crowd on their feet and dancing.

Black Moth Super Rainbow took the stage next and the hip hop crowd didn't really know what to think of them. For being a mostly hip hop crowd in Baton Rouge though I expected this. Most of the set was new songs and they sounded great live. The bassist (who looks similair to Brian Posehn) really knew how to make the mostly electronic group sound more organic. However this wasn't one of those indie pop shows where all you have to watch is a few kids up on stage in tight pants trying to play instruments. These guys have talent and also a great visuals show. They played random videos that included: Richard Simmons work out videos, an interview with 3 women wrestlers, soft core porn, and clips from random kids shows. These clips seemed to sync up pretty well with the music, but that could have just been the beer doing that. I had high expectations for BMSR and they surpassed them.

When Aesop Rock took the stage I really wasn't expecting all that much. I had seen him at this past Bonnaroo and wasn't too impressed but this show left me with a better impression of him. He had the same people with him(DJ Big Whiz and Rob Sonic) but something about this show just seemed better. Although it might have been because I wasn't trying to keep my eyelids from shutting the whole show like I was at Bonnaroo. He and Rob Sonic were on time and really knew how to present live hip hop in a way that most rappers don't know how. He played a lot of songs from his new album including "Coffee" and "Bring Back Pluto" as well as playing some of the songs off Labor Days that made him famous like "No Regrets" and he ended the show with a requested "Daylight." This show made me realize why Aesop Rock is one of the few constantly touring hip hop artists like The Roots and Jurassic 5.

All in all this show lived up to the hype I had given it. This show rolls through Atlanta on Tuesday the 20th and I advise you all to get there early because the opening acts are great!

Humpnight Randomnimity

Three interesting shows this week i didn't mention earlier are:

I can't decide which Saturday night show to hit up after Joanna Newsom, so I'll probably coin flip or something. With the Thursday night show, I guess I'm going to offer the dissenting opinion relative to all the other blogs in town that I would recommend going to Smashing Pumpkins and Explosions in The Sky over the free Star Bar thing. I know Black Kids are somewhat local and blowing up thanks to the 'fork, but I've listened to that EP a few times and it just doesn't stand out to me that much. It's not bad or anything, but it sounds like a dancier ripoff of the whole Swan Lake spectrum of indie-rock and its just not exciting me that much relative to all the other stuff I've been listening to lately. Also, I caught Judi Chicago last month, and as much as I hate ripping on locals, I have to call it like it is, and I think they just pretty much suck. Just because you perform crappy music in your underwear doesn't make up for the crappy music you are performing. I mean, the show is free so it's probably worth going if you don't have the cash for the other show, but I just wanted to get my opinion out there.

Now I'll cool off the haterade and give you a nice PJ Harvey vid:

Back to the haterade, Band of Horses are doing 3 New Years shows at the Earl and tickets go on sale Friday. BOH, or "Fisher Price, My First My Morning Jacket" as I like to call them, are another band that I think receive a little too much praise relative to what every other band on Earth is doing right now. Cease To Begin isn't a bad album or anything, but it's not a great one either.

Someone who is worthy of the hype is coming to Eyedrum in January:

The onslaught of My Bloody Valentine reunion rumors continue.

Want to see what Dethklok look and sound like live? Here you go:

Here's a The Octopus Project vid:

In case you had forgotten how awesome Marnie Stern is or you are a new ohmpark reader, here's a vid:

Between The Buried And Me are an awesome metal band that i've recently been jamming alot:

In case you don't know, Radiohead did some crazy webcast stuff last week. I've got a huge-ass article planned as i haven't really talked about the new album much and i'm still listening to it like crazy. Until i get a chance to go on an In Rainbows lovefest, here's my favourite song from it done live on the webcast:

Ohmpark Presents: Band Together

We have one more big music event left this year, and here it is:

That's right, a ton of great tunes for an even greater cause. Check it:

Some of Georgia’s hottest indie music acts have united to play the first ever “Band Together” benefit for Refugee Family Services on November 28th at the Earl. Bringing local musicians together to raise awareness about the growing refugee community in Atlanta, Band Together will be a night of entertainment to benefit Refugee Family Services. The line-up for the evening includes local bands: Morning State, The Pendletons, Delta Company, and Mack Messiah. Also, DJ Preston Craig (KISSAtlanta/Decatur Social Club) will be on hand to MC the event and will DJ between live sets.

Morning State and The Pendletons recently performed at the CMJ Music Marathon in New York, attracting significant national press attention. Morning State received a sterling live review from SPIN Magazine, among others. Athens, GA’s The Pendletons brought its unique brand of pop-leaning indie rock to sets with Casper and the Cookies, The Silent Years, Dead Confederate, and more. DJ Preston Craig has established himself as a revered DJ, event promoter, and local music advocate. Check out a powerful feature story on Craig in Creative Loafing. Mack Messiah has long been a staple of the Atlanta music scene, and frontman Kenny Crucial has gained significant attention as “Atlanta’s Biggest Music Fan” (Atlanta Music Guide). Delta Company is a new lo-fi blues rock group featuring several veteran Atlanta musicians.

The Band Together event hopes to bring the pressing issue of the needs of Atlanta refugees to the local arts and music community. “Band Together is a great opportunity to enjoy great local music while also supporting the refugee community”, says Rahul Desai, New Arrivals Coordinator at Refugee Family Services.

Raffles for a variety of prizes from supportive local businesses will also be held: Sweetgrass Wellness Spa, The Kingfisher Café, Brick Store Pub, Decatur CD, Java Monkey, Sevananda Natural Foods Market, Criminal Records, Abbadabbas, and Ten Thousand Villages. The Ohmpark Atlanta Music Blog is a lead media sponsor of the event, and artist advocacy firm indie outlaw (home to Morning State and The Pendletons) is also providing publicity sponsorship.

Atlanta is the seventh largest destination in the United States for international refugees seeking to rebuild their lives. More than 35,000 refugees have arrived in the past decade to Georgia, joining a thriving international community – sharing art, culture and cuisine while contributing greatly to the community. These women, men and children are among 14 million refugees worldwide that have been forced to flee violent persecution in their homeland but have been given an opportunity by the U.S. government to rebuild their lives in the safe haven of the metro Atlanta community.

About Refugee Family Services:
Refugee Family Services (RFS) is a metro Atlanta nonprofit organization that supports the efforts of refugee/immigrant women and children to achieve self-sufficiency in the United States by providing education and economic opportunity. RFS provides services in 20 languages to more than 2,500 refugee women and their families each year. RFS programs include women’s support, including health education, life skills, English as a second language, domestic violence crisis intervention and prevention and job placement. Programs focused for children and youth refugees include support with school transition, after school programs, tutoring and a summer camp.

What The Hell Am I Listening To?!?

Today's theme: From Old-school folk to Nu-school dope

Iron And Wine

Iron And Wine's 2005 EP Woman King was one of those rare EPs that are so good you forget it is not a full-length album. He hit a stride in his songwriting that produced purely beautiful, perfect songs and the question was whether this was a peak moment or whether Sam Beam could continue on in this fuller, more engaging type of stuff as opposed to his earlier, quieter folk songs. With his third LP, The Shepherd's Dog, he has proved that Woman King was no fluke and that he is wholly capable of producing top-notch tunes in bulk. Check it out yourself:

Soulsavers

The British production and remixing team of Rich Machin and Ian Glover's second album, It's Not How Far You Fall, It's The Way You Land, has been in my heavy rotation lately and it should be in yours as well. Featuring Screaming Trees' Mark Lanegan on vocals all over it, it's a great album that sort of feels like a more folksy and bluesy version of The Cinematic Orchestra. The opening track "Revival" is such an epic and gorgeous song:

Phosphorescent

I just listened to Pride last night for the first time and was blown away by how awesome this album is. Typically I let a new album marinate in my brain for a little while before I talk about it here, but I felt the short release sort of reminded me a lot of Iron And Wine in a more indie-rock way and when I experience a rare amazing first listen I have to pass it on. Phosphorescent is Athens, Ga native Matthew Houck and is someone that I did not know about until now but will be looking into deeply. Check it:

Castanets

Another great band i've just recently got turned on to is Castanets, aka Raymond Raposa plus revolving cast. The psychedelic folk action on their latest release, In The Vines, is a challenging but vastly rewarding listen that I like more and more every time I jam it. There's something so cool about taking such a conservative sound such as folk and pushing the limits of experimental with it.

Sub Pop: Leading The Record Industry By Example

Finally a record label gets digital downloads right. Sub Pop, home to artists including Iron and Wine, David Cross, The Go! Team and The Album Leaf have announced that they are selling many of their albums online in 192khz MP3 format. Full albums currently cost $9.90 and the only EP (Flight Of The Conchords) costs a mere $4.

Here is the best part. You can re-download the mp3s at ANY time. Even if they add bonus tracks or make the music a higher bitrate, you don't have to buy the newest version. My speculation is that in 5 years when bandwidth is better you'll be able to download uncompressed .WAV or .FLAC files. Who needs a CD then? Hopefully other indie labels follow suit. Don't expect any of the dumb asses running the majors to do this anytime soon but if they did things would be a whole lot better for labels and music fans alike.

Sub Pop also claims "we have every intention of making rare and out-of-print titles available exclusively through our shop." So soon you may be able to purchase the Nirvana "Love Buzz" single for a lot less than $1000. It won't be the extremely rare vinyl version but who cares, records are for hipsters.

The full catalog is here.

My top 3 recommendations:
Iron & Wine- The Shepherd's Dog
David Cross - It's Not Funny
Sleater-Kinney - The Woods

Live Review: Voodoo Music Experience

The weekend before Halloween, we went down to New Orleans to catch Voodoo Fest. We arrived downtown early Friday, checked into the bed and breakfast we were staying at, hung out for a second, and headed down to City Park where the fest was located. Since the line-up had been announced, one of the acts I was most excited about seeing was Ghost, whose album from this year, In Stormy Nights, I've loved. Unfortunately, when we went to set up to catch them, they weren't the Japanese noise-rock group Ghost, they were the New Orleans nu-metal, rap-funk group Ghost. We felt like we had just got punked. After that debacle, I went to catch Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and they were ok, but nothing really special.

Next up was Porcupine Tree, who put on a hell of a show jamming out hard. There was a relatively small crowd for this show and even Steven Wilson joked around about no one there knowing who they were. If you still haven't looked into this band, do it now!

After wandering around the fest for a little while, we caught M.I.A. from afar while we waited for Rage. I was disappointed with her sound live, but hip-hop live almost always leaves me wanting and i was pretty far from the stage, so I won't hold it against her, but I just don't think I understand completely why everyone is so into her. Her rap style is so monotone and repetitive. I've listened to her new album a few times and I just don't think she sounds that special.

After that, it was time for the main event, Rage Against The Machine. I had caught them at Phillips Arena back when they were touring for Battle Of Los Angeles and had loved that show so I was very excited to catch them here. They played a little longer than an hour, went through most of the hits, and by the end, I didn't think it compared to the first time I saw them at all. They were very sloppy and didn't sound like they were together at all, which is surprising to me since most of them have been playing together in Audioslave. The other main problem was the crowd didn't really seem to be into them at all. When I caught them before, my favorite part of the show was watching the entire crowd go nuts, and this time it just didn't seem to inspire that sort of reaction. Overall, though, it was still great seeing them again.

When we got back to our place Friday night, before heading down to Bourbon St. until 5am, we found a note from the woman running the bed and breakfast accusing us of eating her food in the freezer. The next morning, Biggie C woke up first to go through his photos from the day before and the woman came out and started screaming at him about the supposed missing food. After about an hour and a half of drama, the end game was that she was mistaken about the food and since Biggie C didn't apologize for disagreeing with her about the fact that we didn't eat the food, she kicked him out of the bed and breakfast. So we then had to waste another hour finding hotel to stay at for the rest of the weekend. The crappy B&B's email is hosts@ArtsBandB.com, so we urge all our readers to have some fun with that.

Saturday I didn't really get to catch much music because of the above fiasco, but i caught a little bit of Ghostland Observatory, Ben Harper, and Spoon, who were all decent but not inspiring.

The best show of the weekend in my opinion was next, The Smashing Pumpkins. While I had some trouble enjoying the Asheville show I had caught over the summer because I didn't know most of the songs they played, now that i know and love Zeitgeist, they were simply amazing. The almost two-hour set contained very little old-school hit songs you would expect from the typical festival show, but rather put on a compelling display of why the nu-Smashing Pumpkins are phenomenal in their own retro-rock 'n' roll way. If you can score a ticket to one of the make-up Atlanta shows this month, do it. For all of the music critic masses that just won't take the new album seriously, you're only depriving yourself of some great tunes.

After that, I caught the Tiesto set, who did some pretty good trance, capped by a Tegan And Sara remix that was, for better or worse, stuck in all of our heads for the rest of the weekend.

Sunday I started on the tiny stage to check out Good Guys, I really interesting hybrid of metal and Lounge music. This New Orleans native band came out dressed in Ghostbuster uniforms and were really cool and weird. If you want to hear something unlike anything you've heard before, i recommend checking them out.

Next up I checked out Quintron And Miss Pussycat. Despite the fact that Miss Pussycat , Quintron's wife, seemed more like a prop than a musician, Quintron tore it up with a really interesting array of instrumentation that apparently he has invented or built. I was way in the back for the show so I didn't really get to see everything he was using, but I hope to catch this New Orleans act again, maybe at one of their upcoming Mardi Gras shows.

After that I caught the end of the Black Crowes show, and it was better than the first time I saw them at Bonnaroo, which was terrible, but they just aren't my thing. Common came on next and I thought he put on a really great show, with a full band backing him. After that I caught Wilco to close out the fest and they rocked just as hard as their spectacular Bonnaroo set earlier this year, but I didn't quite like the song selection as much. There is no denying that Wilco as it is now is a pretty top-notch band and I will go see them every chance I get.

My overall impression of my second Voodoo experience was overwhelmingly positive. I'm a big fan of the two opposing stages going back and forth keeping music constantly going that both Pitchfork Fest and Lollapalooza also employ. The sound systems seemed to have a minimal amount of problems, although I did hear a few. My biggest complaint about the weekend would be the crowd. At the peak times on Friday and Saturday, there were ridiculously long lines for the bathrooms and food and beer outlets, but the Voodoo Fest's estimates on attendance were over 150,000 people for the weekend, up over 50% from the previous year's 93,000, so i don't think they were fully prepared for so many people. Also, the crowd seemed to remind me most of the Music Midtown crowds of a few years ago that don't exude the same level of respect for their fellow festival goers you expect at hippy fests like Echo Project and Bonnaroo. But for me, those were only minor annoyances that did very little to curb the fun I had this year at Voodoo and I'm looking forward to checking it out again next year.
