Friday Free-Style

Last weekend I caught Nomem Novum (newest project from Moorish Idols) at ParkGrounds and it was pretty cool. Here's a few pics and a vid:

Baroness will be at The Masquerade on March 20th. Even Pitchfork don't know that.

Stone Temple Pilots
are playing Wisconsin's Rock Fest.

The new Gnarls Barkley album, The Odd Couple, comes out April 8th.

Chris Rock, one of my favourite comedians, has been added to the Bonnaroo line-up and will be performing on the main stage. Awesome. How about a music video:

Find out why My Bloody Valentine didn't do Coachella here, and "Don't worry--they'll come to America."

So all the wookies and hippies pissed off about Metallica at Bonnaroo are rallying around the newest festival to emerge in this golden ago of American festivals. Behold Rothbury Fest:

Dave Mathews, Band Widespread Panic, John Mayer, 311, Phil Lesh And Friends, Primus, Thievery Corporation, Snoop Dogg, Modest Mouse, Michael Franti and Spearhead, Gov't Mule, STS9, Colbie Caillat, Slightly Stoopid, The Black Keys, Keller Williams And the WMD's, Yonder Mountain String Band featuring John Fishman, Gogol Bordello, Citizen Cope, The Disco Biscuits, Medeski Martin And Wood, Ray Lamontagne, Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi Soul Stew Revival, Drive-By Truckers, Of Montreal, Etown Radio Show, The Dresden Dolls, Gomez ,Brett Dennen, Taj Mahal, Mike Gordon, Zappa Plays Zappa, Crystal Method DJ Set, JJ Grey And Mofro, The Greyboy All-Stars, The Secret Machines, Railroad Earth, Beth Orton ,Jakob Dylan and The Gold Mountain Rebels, A3, Bettye Lavette, Emmitt Nershi Band, Lotus, EOTO, Panjea with Michael Kang, Yard Dogs Road Show, State Radio, The Beautiful Girls, Sage Francis, Tea Leaf Green, Bassnectar, Pnuma Trio, Diplo, Flosstradamus, The Juan Maclean, The Dynamites featuring Charles Walker, DJ Rekha, Dead Confederate, Motion Potion, DJ Rootz, Sojorn Busdriver

So if you're one of those folks that wish it were 2003 and every hippy festival had the exact same line-up every year, you'll be ecstatic about this one. It goes down July 3rd-6th in Rothbury, Michigan. Rothbury Fest website.

A festival that I'd probably be slightly more interested in checking out is the New England Metal Fest. They got a line-up too:

The fest will be merging with Gigantour for one-night, as the Friday night portion of the show will feature Megadeth, In Flames, Children of Bodom, Job For A Cowboy and High on Fire, so the first night is officially Gigantour night. Saturday’s lineup will be headlined by Dimmu Borgir, Shadows Fall and Behemoth. Sunday will feature Ministry, Meshuggah and Nevermore. And that’s just the friggen headliners. Take a look at the rest of the bands expected to play on the show:

The Dillinger Escape Plan, Overkill, A Life Once Lost, God Forbid, Disfear, Hate Eternal, Municipal Waste, Shai Halud, Soilent Green, Skeletonwitch, The Acacia Strain, Vital Remains, After the Burial, Animosity, As Blood Runs Black, Belay My Last, Born of Osiris, Briandrill, Classic Struggle, Cockpunch!, Cold World, Dead to Fall, Demiricous, Eluveitie, Elysia, Embrace the End, Emmure, The End, Ensiferum, First Blood, From a Second Story Window, Full Blown Chaos, The Ghost Inside, Hemlock, Impending Doom, Keep Of Kalessin, Kid Deposit Triumph, Ligeia, Mensrea, Monstrosity, On Broken Wings, Recon, Red I Flight, Rhinoceros, Shipwreck a.d., Since the Blood, Sleeping Giant, Sons of Azrael, Stick to Your Guns, Stray from the Path, Through the Eyes of the Dead, Tony Danza Tap Dance Extravaganze, Trap Them, Turisas, Tyr, Unexpect, Unholy, Vanna, Veil of Maya, Waking the Cadaver, Winds of Plague, Withered, and Xtyrantx.

Pretty exciting! The event will take place from April 25 to 27 at the Palladium in Worcester, MA.

Stereogum posted some funny Valentines cards, so even though I'm a day late, here's a few:

You can go get Amplive's Radiohead In Rainbow remixes here while you ge ready to snag tickets tomorrow or are stoked about the tickets you got yesterday.

Best 2006 Albums Of 2007

Before I inundate you with all of my best of 2007 stuff, I want to do a little addendum to my 2006 top 50 Albums list. Over the course of this year I discovered some albums that came out last year but wasn't aware of because I wasn't blogging and researching obsessively then. These albums here should all have deserved to be on my top 50 list because they are all amazing. Despite being released in '06, though, these albums will always make me think of this year because of all the great times I had with them as the soundtrack. Pick up these essentials:

Beach House : Beach House

Final Fantasy : He Poos Clouds

Midlake : The Trials Of Van Occupanther

Portugal The Man : Waiter: "You Vultures!"

Silversun Pickups : Carnavas

Snowden : Anti-Anti

And that's not all kiddies. The Atlanta superstars are all over the place this week with a very exciting line-up Friday night at the Variety Playhouse. This town's greatest hipster bands, Black Lips, Deerhunter, Snowden, and The Selmanaires will all be on one stage together:

If for some weird reason you aren't into that show, GWAR will be at The Masquerade Friday night. Saturday night Atlanta superstar week continues with Anna Kramer opening for Southern Culture On The Skids at the Earl. Next Monday night you can choose between a Shannon Hoon-less Blind Melon at the Masquerade or seeing The Sword at the Earl.

Akron/Family
has a new album coming out September 10th called Love Is Simple. Remember they will be in Athens, Ga at the 40 Watt on September 15th and I highly recommend checking them out because they were one of the best shows I've seen all year. Check it out:

The new season of PBS's Austin City Limits TV show begins in October and will feature Arcade Fire, Bloc Party, The Decemberists, Wilco, Regina Spektor, Explosions In The Sky, Lucinda Williams, and others.

The new Prefuse 73 album called Preparations comes out October 23rd.

Theree other good local shows this week include Slow Motion Crash at The Masquerade Tommorrow, From Exile at Lenny's Wednesday night, and The Orphins and Moorish Idols at ISP Thursday night..

Beach House and Grizzly Bear are touring together, but unfortunetly nowhere near Atlanta. You out of town readers need to go see this if they are playing near you. Here's the video for Beach House's "Master Of None":

Live Review: Galactic, Cypress Hill, Beach House (5-12-2007)

Last Saturday night I went and checked out the Southern Comfort Music Experience being held for free in Centennial Olympic Park downtown. The show was free and 21+, two things I'm a fan of. The rainy weather during the day kept the turnout very low, so we were easily able to get front row for Galactic. As I mentioned before, we pregamed watching a Stanton Moore instructional video, and it was a great way to get ready for a Galactic show. This was the first time I had seen them without "The Houseman" doing vocals, which I had hated in the past, so I was looking forward to hearing them as an instrumental group. They came out and put on a great show. I'm very picky about which jambands I like, and these guys are definitely a group I enjoy. They do a great job of taking genres and styles that have been very played out and breathe new life into them. Near the end of the set, Hip-Hop artist Mr. Lif joined them on stage to do a few songs including one off of the upcoming Galactic "Hip-Hop" album that will feature collaborations with Lyrics Born, Ladybug Mecca (Digable Planets) Gift For Gab (Blackalicious) and unfortunetly Lateef The Truth Speaker (man does he suck), plus many more. (There are reports that Charlie 2na will be performing with them at Bonnaroo) . Here's some pics:

We decided to get out of the front to avoid the rowdy rednecks and the highly efficient and large security force for Cypress Hill. There was a slight downpour for a few minutes between sets, but it was the only rain we'd see. Cypress Hill came out with no elaborate stage setup as i had seen them use the first time I saw them, but they still brought the music full force. Despite a little new material from their upcoming album, the set was very "hit-friendly" and the entire crowd celebrated with billows of smoke.

I left near the end of Cypress Hill's set to catch Beach House at The Earl. I arrived with plenty of time to get up front and enjoy this great duo. They did some new songs, one i really loved, and perfect renditions of their self-titled album's best stuff. I seriously recommend checking out their album if you haven't, because it is beautiful. The boys from Deerhunter were next to me at the show and they seemed to be digging it too. They closed with "Master Of None", probably my favourite of theirs. The lighting was even worse than last time so I didn't get any really good shots, but you can always look at Biggie C's photos of Beach House earlier this year at The Earl. I wanted to catch The Clientele, who was on afterwards, but it didn't work out.

March Wrap-Up

A quarter of 2007 is over and it was a lot of fun. So far, 2007 is turning out to be a great year in music delivering stellar albums, great shows, and an unprecedented amount of good American music festivals shaping up. I've noticed some interesting trends. For instance, In 2005 it was looking like Arcade Fire and Bloc Party we're going to ascend to greatness and that Modest Mouse had lost everything good about it. One respective album from each band later, Arcade Fire and Bloc Party don't feel so much better than the rest of the pack(although that could easily change) and I can't think of a bigger, better, more important American band in the last 13 years than Modest Mouse.

Anyways, March was a busy month for Ohmpark. Ichuda reviewed the Mastodon show and the Red Sparrowes show. Biggie C got some good pics of the Grizzly Bear show and the Sparklehorse show:

I sat down with the boys from Passer By. Biggie C got some fantastic photos of The Slip and Gringo Star:

Sleo did a review of one of the moe. shows in Atlanta. I did a write-up on the Producer Battles at Apache Cafe's World Famous Mic Club. Biggie C got some shots at the Beach House and Birds Of Avalon show:

Me and Biggie C went to the Explosions In The Sky, The Paper Chase, and Eluvium show:

Biggie C caught the 404 Noise and Experimental Festival:

Biggie C dropped the first Ohmpark Mixtape and wrote a heart-felt letter to Joanna Newsom. Annereade reviewed the new Modest Mouse album. And Biggie C shot up the Kid Koala and Samadha show.

We hope you're enjoying Ohmpark and remember if you have any suggestions or comments or want to hip us to a band or some news or a show, hit us up at: info@ohmpark.com

Thanks for reading!
