A Saturday Superpost

Before I get started, I just want to shout out to Lern for fixing my Internet. It feels good to be blogging from my own house again. Anyways, let's get started with festivals as there were some big announcements this week. The biggest would be All Points West (Coachella East). The festival will include two nights of Radiohead, which is ridiculous. Here's the line-up so far:

Radiohead, Jack Johnson, Underworld, Kings of Leon, Rodrigo y Gabriela, Cat Power, The Roots, The New Pornographers, Youssou N'Dour, Animal Collective, Andrew Bird, Michael Franti & Spearhead, Metric, CSS, Girl Talk, Chromeo, The Go! Team, Amadou & Mariam, The Black Angels, Sia, The Felice Brothers, K'Naan, Jason Isbell, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, Alberta Cross, The Virgins, Black Kids, Mates of State, Duffy, Forro in the Dark, Nicole Atkins, Juana Molina, Little Brother, Rogue Wave, Neil Halstead and Your Vegas.

Outside of Radiohead the line-up seems a bit weak to be charging $258 for a weekend pass, but I guess with Coachella selling out last year so fast, they have decided to really push the price limits this year. Regardless, though, I may still go to this on the strength of seeing Radiohead in such a cool location and hanging out in New York City. Tickets go on sale this Friday. The fest goes down August 8th-10th. Get all the info at the website.

Live Review: Galactic, Cypress Hill, Beach House (5-12-2007)

Last Saturday night I went and checked out the Southern Comfort Music Experience being held for free in Centennial Olympic Park downtown. The show was free and 21+, two things I'm a fan of. The rainy weather during the day kept the turnout very low, so we were easily able to get front row for Galactic. As I mentioned before, we pregamed watching a Stanton Moore instructional video, and it was a great way to get ready for a Galactic show. This was the first time I had seen them without "The Houseman" doing vocals, which I had hated in the past, so I was looking forward to hearing them as an instrumental group. They came out and put on a great show. I'm very picky about which jambands I like, and these guys are definitely a group I enjoy. They do a great job of taking genres and styles that have been very played out and breathe new life into them. Near the end of the set, Hip-Hop artist Mr. Lif joined them on stage to do a few songs including one off of the upcoming Galactic "Hip-Hop" album that will feature collaborations with Lyrics Born, Ladybug Mecca (Digable Planets) Gift For Gab (Blackalicious) and unfortunetly Lateef The Truth Speaker (man does he suck), plus many more. (There are reports that Charlie 2na will be performing with them at Bonnaroo) . Here's some pics:

We decided to get out of the front to avoid the rowdy rednecks and the highly efficient and large security force for Cypress Hill. There was a slight downpour for a few minutes between sets, but it was the only rain we'd see. Cypress Hill came out with no elaborate stage setup as i had seen them use the first time I saw them, but they still brought the music full force. Despite a little new material from their upcoming album, the set was very "hit-friendly" and the entire crowd celebrated with billows of smoke.

I left near the end of Cypress Hill's set to catch Beach House at The Earl. I arrived with plenty of time to get up front and enjoy this great duo. They did some new songs, one i really loved, and perfect renditions of their self-titled album's best stuff. I seriously recommend checking out their album if you haven't, because it is beautiful. The boys from Deerhunter were next to me at the show and they seemed to be digging it too. They closed with "Master Of None", probably my favourite of theirs. The lighting was even worse than last time so I didn't get any really good shots, but you can always look at Biggie C's photos of Beach House earlier this year at The Earl. I wanted to catch The Clientele, who was on afterwards, but it didn't work out.

420 Free-Style

We'll start today with some good 420 video:

Joanna Newsom is doing a couple dates with Bjork. The Ohmpark crew has contacted our travel agents.

Grizzly Bear had to cancel some dates, but they will be on MTV2's Subterranean this Sunday night. Set your DVRs.

Lily Allen has cancelled most her remaining US tour because she hates America. She'll still play Bonnaroo.

Black Lips have a new album coming out this year and Pitchfork loves them.

Wilco has toys made after them.

Stephen Malkmus' new album is exactly “67.4685% completed".

Emusic has surpased 300,000 subscribers. If I bought digital music, that's where i'd get alot of it, but 8-track cassettes just sound so much warmer.

My Morning Jacket will be performing with the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra at this year's Lollapalooza Festival, taking place in Chicago's Grant Park, August 3-5.

Austin City Limits Festival has tickets on sale now despite not announcing a line-up until mid-May. I'm getting a little bit tired of the sell tickets to a mystery line-up thing.

Minus The Bear have a new album coming out this year.

Rob's House Records talks to Creative Loafing about house parties.

U2 is writing music for an upcoming Spiderman musical.

Sigur Ros are releasing a book this summer about them touring. Here's a great video:

Radiohead's awesome Com Lag (2 + 2 = 5) EP will finally be released in the US on May 8th.

Tool has a massive amount of re-scheduled tour dates including a June 4th appearance at the Gwinnett Center and a headlining spot at Bonnaroo.

Dream Theater has announced some US dates, but nowhere near here. Here's a video:

Internet radio is getting the shaft.

Devendra Banhart is working on a new album.
