Torrent of the Day: My Morning Jacket - Bonnaroo 2008

One of the biggest surprises of Bonnaroo for me was My Morning Jacket. I have enjoyed their last two albums “Z” and “Evil Urges”. However, I certainly wasn’t aware of what a staggering live show these guys can put on. With the help of saxophonist Jeff Coffin, the Nashville Horns, and Metallica’s Kirk Hammett, My Morning Jacket put on a nearly four hour long party. The band played a majority of the songs from their last two albums and a couple songs from their older albums. They also spiced things up a bit with a diverse sprinkling of covers from Sly & the Family Stone, Funkadelic, Erykah Badu, Kool and the Gang, Bobby Womack & Peace, and Velvet Underground. They closed out their late night set covering Mötley Crüe’s “Home Sweet Home” with comedian Zach Galifianakis dressed as little orphan Annie. Enjoy.

Torrent Of The Day: Dark Meat (4/27/2008)

I finally got around to listening to Athens, Ga's Dark Meat. Very interesting stuff. As I listen to Universal Indians, I find myself really loving the extremely weird stuff, but not so into their particular brand of southern rock during the more accessible parts. But despite my own subjective hang-ups with them, they are certainly worth looking into.

Torrent Of The Day: At The Drive In (1/18/2001 12" vinyl bootleg)

This is pretty cool:

At The Drive In - Live In Tokyo Japan, January 18 2001 (Lost Horse Records, catalog #LH-2010, price 2,500 Yen) bootleg vinyl 12" lp (butterscotch/cream swirl pattern) >Technics SL-B350 turntable (refurbished but not modified)>Edirol R-09 (via analog line in)>16 bit stereo WAV>CEP2 (fades, trims, remove most pops/clicks,join/merge side A&B,volume adjustments)>CDWAVE (track splits on sector boundaries)>FLAC via Traders Little Helper (level 8)>bit torrent

Record was cleaned before transfer but some low level vinyl noise is still audible. The recording is taken from the circulating Japanese pro shot video (Shibuya ON AIR EAST), and was just a tad hot at the start of Arcarsenal, but the levels were quickly adjusted by the filming crew. Any edits made by the manufacturer of this lp were left intact.

The album and jacket are very nicely presented, with awesome artwork on the front cover, and as stated above, the vinyl is a butterscotch and cream swirl pattern.

There are some some great shows floating around The Traders Den right now, so here you go. First, there's this Arcade Fire:

Arcade Fire 2008-01-30 The Forum, Melbourne, Australia (FLAC)

While we wait to see if that TMV Atlanta show actually happens, here's something to keep us busy. This is the first time The Mars Volta have ever done an FM broadcast of their show, so pick this essential one up:

THE MARS VOLTA FM BROADCAST - 1.30.2008, UC Irvine (en-dw remaster) (FLAC)

If you want to get a taste of what will be one the best shows at Bonnaroo, go get this:

Battles 2008-01-28 Big Day Out, Flemington Racecourse, Melbourne, Australia (FLAC)

If you missed the Cut Chemist, DJ Shadow, and Kid Koala show a few weeks ago, here's another recent show to jam:

Torrent of The Day: Explosions In The Sky (5/5/2007) (DVD)

As I write this, tickets for the Explosions In The Sky show in April are still available, but I doubt they will be much longer, so go get yours now fool! Here's an awesome 3 camera mix DVD of a show from last year:

Explosions in the Sky 2007-05-05 Vancouver, BC [3-Cam] (NTSC)

An insane amount of work was put into this. I'm guessing close to 50 hours. The biggest reason was that I pretty much had to do this twice as my HD died when I had it complete the first time around. Angles were mixed in FCP, menus made in photoshop and authored in DVD Studio Pro. 24p and film damage filters were added to try to 'average' out all the angles. I was thinking of doing full motion menus, but Apple Motion had a steeper learning curve than I thought. No selling/ebaying and all that stuff. I don't make a penny off of this and neither should you. I've got plenty more where this dvd came from, most which would kill this one. I'd hate to have to have to stop sharing because of a couple of bad apples. I won't be seeding 24/7, so no whining. oh and a waffles invite would be much appreciated.

We didn't get a chance to talk about the amazing Joanna Newsom show a few weeks ago so here it is for you to download. She played Ys from front to back with ASO and it was flawless. The second set featured only her 4-piece "Ys Street Band" and some solo action. It was definetly one of the best shows of the year for me. Thanks to Page Hall for some pics:

Review by a member of the now defunct Q And Not U in the washington post:

Tuesday, October 2, 2007; Page C05
Thurston Moore
"I don't shut up, I grow up. And when I look at you, I throw up." you might remember that classic playground taunt from the '80s coming-of-age flick "Stand by Me," but it's also an apt description of Thurston Moore's performance at Rock & Roll Hotel Saturday night. Almost 30 years after forming legendary rock outfit Sonic Youth, the 49-year-old singer-guitarist is still making a racket, unfurling cuts from his new solo disc, "Trees Outside the Academy."

And then there's the "throw up" part: Moore discreetly puked on his guitar during "Off Work" -- a grungy new instrumental reminiscent of Sonic Youth's 1992 alterna-hit "100%." Thankfully, the illness was only momentary and the poor guy laughed it off, dedicating his next tune, "Fri/End," to "my friends" at a certain local eatery where he'd dined earlier that day.
Moore may have been strumming an acoustic guitar, but things got plenty noisy thanks to a backing troupe that featured Sonic Youth drummer Steve Shelley, No Neck Blues Band bassist Matt Heyner, violinist Samara Lubelski and guitarist Chris Brokaw. The four players added grit, but without overpowering those evocative melodies that perpetually reside beneath Sonic Youth's distortion-happy outer crust.
The set's highlight came early with "The Shape Is in a Trance," as Moore's guitar work evoked both classic Sonic Youth and the weathered melancholy of Neil Young. Forgive the expression, Thurston, but that jam is totally sick.

Taper's notes: I was in the second row center for the first 4 songs, but the pogo/pushing/screaming/blasphemous shouts ;-) were just unbearable, so during the 'Cross The Breeze coda I moved back a bit to the side of the stage in front of the left speaker stack. There I stumbled into some good friends of mine and everything became a sort of celebration, a bit of small talking, screaming and singalong added by the surrounding crowd (not too good for the recording....sorry), but we didn't talk while they played, so you'll hear a bunch of banter and stupid sentences in Italian/local dialect between the songs. All in all I think this is a pretty decent audience recording, especially considering this has been my first "taping" experience ever without a soundboard input and I never tried the Edirol "on the field". The sound was pretty good, Kim's voice a bit too low in the mic maybe and the drums not too clear, but no major issues. I had to switch the channels because I "wore" the recorder with a sort of necklace, and could not point it towards the stage as you're supposed to do with it.

These guys are great. New stuff is solid, looking forward to October 2007 for their second cd release. Go get their first album "Everything All the Time" while you wait. Not sure on the new song names. Number 1 seems obvious enough, 6 is correct, 11 is hard to tell - the night and i??, and 12 should be the name of the song - but probably isnt. Great covers too. Enjoy!! -Basshead

Notes:

I bought this as a boxed set in a cd store by my house in dallas
in 1997. It cost me ~65$ us. The packaging is a bronze/brass box
with an embossed Pearl Jam logo on the front, and the entire track
listing stickered on the back. The sticker on the back also states
that is is one of 1000 ever produced. It was used when i bought it,
and i have only played it a limited number of times.

The important parts of the booklet were scanned and included along with
this release. Some of the files are originals (scans, most of this txt
file) from when I posted this to stg in 2003 as shn files. This is a
new rip, all of the files were ripped with no skips detected by eac.
The cds were badly scratched when I purchased them, I have repaired
them once, and this is likely to be the last time the originals
see a cd player/drive for quite some time.

Enjoy...

I know it's not the whole show, but I guess it's half. He's not that chatty, but you do get a few really funny bits. I coulda put this on dime, but the lineage (and my great reception) really screamed for it to go here. Trade it madly!!!

I did not edit or adjust the equalization of this recording at all. You are
hearing the concert as it happened. The sound in the venue was amazing,
however the bass and the beats were heavy and thumping and you can
feel that in your chest. I was in the sweet spot. I used top of the line
equipment. Do the math.

Notes: (from the taper, posted on Easytree)

The sound in the 8x10 was phenominal that night. They beefed up the house PA system to handle
the low frequencies this band generated.

This one did a great job of picking up the lows..........definitely one of my better stealth efforts.
The balcony at the old 8x10 was 10 ft away from the stage. If you could get your mics out over it, you
got great sound as well as good crowd isolation.

Im interested to know what you think.......I cant believe it was almost nine years ago!

cheers- Mike

ps-Im not responsible for any speaker damage resulting from playing this too loud ; ^ )

Torrent Of The Day: The Grateful Dead (2-26-1977)

One thing you might not know about me is that The Grateful Dead is one of my favourite all-time bands. Despite inventing an entire genre of imitators, there's still nothing like this group. If you aren't very familiar with these guys you should download this show, get really baked, and jam it:

† Project WBOTB
† these shns were SBE fixed (by set), then encoded to flac16 (level 6). This entire process was repeated, resulting in identical wav md5s.
† The original shns were created in 2002, but they're not in circulation and didn't exist in the database (which is why these shns were converted and fixed).

Notes from pjnola24:
I don't know if this is a PRE-FM SBD or an FM Broadcast show. The Hard to Imagine Website claims that this show is available only as FM Broadcast. This is probably accurate; however it seems that the sound quality is just as good as some PRE-FM SBD shows that I've heard. The left/right separation on the guitars is fairly good and the clarity and separation of the individual instruments is pretty good as well.

Also note, that this IS the complete show. Pearl Jam was apparently an opening band for Alice and Chains and Soundgarden for this particular show.

The Decemberists
March 31, 2007

Church Audio STC-11s > CA-9100 Preamp > iRiver h120 (16 bit/44.1 wav)

Transfer: wav file > usb wire > Sound Studio (Mac OS 10.3.9) > split files .aif (volume boost by +15 db, plus some mixing) > flac (xACT)

Location: about 20 rows back on the floor, center stage

Comments:
Easily the most "rocking" Decemberists show I've ever seen or heard. Colin says early in the show that Chris Funk (the band's guitarist) made up the setlist for the show. They played The Crane Wife part 1 only, which was interesting (and better than linking it with part 2). We got to hear the live debut of a b-side from The Crane Wife, a song that is MUCH better live than the studio version: The Perfect Crime #1. Also, an encore of The Tain was a nice surprise (though I would have liked one more album song to close the show). The in-crowd entertainment was a re-enactment of the battle of Gettysburg instead of the Charge of the Light Brigade (especially nice to hear the guy behind me cheer loudly when Colin says the Confederates had won the battle). A fan got up on stage during O Valencia to sing backup and play a percussive noise maker. After the show I got to shake hands with John, the drummer, and say hi to Jenny, the keyboard/accordion player, as I walked through the building towards my car. It was a great show.
Now, the sound in a college gym is terrible. The mix was also a bit light on Colin's vocals in my opinion. For some reason I ended up with a lot of static in the left channel, so a bunch of songs have the right channel doubled to avoid the digi-noise from the left mic. There is more crowd than I'd like in the recording too, but that's what you're going to get when people talk and shout requests through the whole show. Overall, with the volume boost I think it's a very solid recording for the given conditions. Please share freely and only in lossless formats.

Notes: Open taping but if you have trouble at the venue ask them to talk with their tour manager Zoey. Eight recordings are available on the LMA. Thank you First Avenue.

The Blood Brothers formed in the Eastside suburbs of Seattle Washington in 1997. Members include Jordan Blilie (vocals), Johnny Whitney (vocals), Morgan Henderson (bass), Cody Votolato (guitar), and Mark Gajadhar (drums). The band has two dedicated vocalists (Jordan Blilie - lead vocals, Johnny Whitney - keyboards, lead vocals). Recent albums have featured a degree of experimental instrumentation: Morgan often deviates from bass to add a second guitar , and also utilizes laptop technology. Johnny has added piano and Wurlitzer organ to many more songs, a process which actually began on "American Vultures" from March on Electric Children. He has claimed he always wanted to incorporate such instruments into the Blood Brothers' sound, but only on signing with a major label prior to ...Burn, Piano Island, Burn did he have the means to do this. - wikipedia

ok, this is the legendary concert from the Mojave Desert from their Bad Moon Rising tour. it is no longer in print. it was made from a VHS transfer i did using MySonicDVD. its decent quality, not bad for such an old show.

I have been listening to He Poos Clouds alot lately so here's a very recent live show:

Final Fantasy / 02.23.07 / Tranzac, Toronto, Canada / Flac

Final Fantasy
Tranzac
Toronto, ON
February 23, 2007

Recorded and uploaded by Winter.
Recorded on a Sharp MD using a Sony digital microphone
Recorded from the front, stage centre-right

Transfered using Total Recorder
Normalised and balanced using Sound Forge
Tracks cut using CD Wave (24-bit but saved backwards compatible)
Converted to Flac, tested and fingerprinted using Flac Frontend.

Audio notes:
Levels slightly exceeded levels part way through, they were adjusted on the fly (sample shows this)
The clicks you hear is the artist's foot hitting his pedals.
The vocals are somewhat low in the mix, but that's how they were meant to be. The artists requested such during the show.
Tracks with question marks are new songs. Titles are based on a blurry setlist photo.

1) Blue Imelda?
2) Do You Love
3) Bass Hit?
4) Hey Dad
5) CN Tower Belongs to the Dead
6) Flare Gun?

Sheep
Dark Side of the Moon
The Happiest Days Of Our Lives
Another Brick In The Wall (Pt 2)

Comfortably Numb.

Total running time: 2:23:36

Due to there being no media available to play High Def Video at the moment this has been converted for normal DVD viewing in NTSC at 720x 480.

Ok, This was the 14th show on the current European tour, and what a show it was!! The venue was a circus type marquee tent on a tarmac carpark just on the outskirts of Cork.
Due to this being in a tent there were no pyrotechnics and a full over head lighting rig was used.
What also makes this show unique is a power cut half way through (at the explosion in Perfect Sense Pt2) causing the main mixing board and the whole PA to go down. All you hear at that point are the onstage monitors and the crowd finish off by singing the end of the song!! There's a 25 minute break while power is resumed and the mixing board reset then the band come back on and continue with the rest of set 1 and go straight into DSOTM (with Nick Mason!)

This is a 2 camera mix and respect has to go to my filming accomplice who got caught filming not once but twice and was subsequently removed from the venue half way through Us and Them, hence the last 45 minutes being a single camera, hey that's the chance us filmers take and the sacrifices we make to bring you this stuff!!

Roger Waters is a Golden God

With all of the Bonnaroo hype this week, the other big deal as far as I'm concerned is the Roger Waters tour storming through the US this summer. Caught him for the third time last September in Chicago and it was the best show I saw all year. Southeastern dates you need to know about:

  • May 18th - West Palm Beach, FL, Sound Advice Amphitheatre (AMEX presale this friday, tickets go on sale March 10th)
  • May 19th - Tampa, FL, Ford Amphitheatre (AMEX presale this Friday, tickets go on sale March 17th)
  • May 22nd - Atlanta, Ga, Phillips Arena (AMEX presale next Friday(23rd), tickets go on sale March 3rd)
I can't find anymore info than that right now, but as soon as we get some, we'll post it. Until then, here's some Roger Waters torrents:

Roger Waters' opera 'Ca Ira 2006-12-30 (There Is Hope) World Premiere (SHN)

Roger Waters' opera 'Ca Ira 2006-12-31 (There Is Hope) New Years Eve Opera Night (SHN)

Roger Waters 1999-08-25 "The Germans Killed the Jews & The Jews Killed the Germans" (SHN)
