What The Hell Am I Listening to?!?

The theme for this installment of What The Hell is seasoned veterans changing up their approach and putting out interesting and a bit underrated albums:

Beck (Los Angeles, CA)

When I think about where Beck is in his career, parallels to Neil Young come to mind for me. All the way back to the beginning through his catalogue, he has conquered tons of genres, amassed endless accolades, and made some super classic songs, and now while people think his best is behind him, he can go in whatever direction he wants free other people's expectations. After his not-so-triumphant return to "old-school Beck" on Guero being his most dissappointing release to date, pretty much everyone still riding the "Loser" bandwagon had jumped off. The downside of that is that most people didn't really pay attention to the spectacular The Information from 2 years ago, but I think maybe the lowered expectations helped take the pressure off to do some really interesting songwriting. Where Guero seemed so shallow and empty, just about trying to catch the listener with up-beat hooks, the two most recent Beck releases seem aimed at a deeper and more nuanced listen. Modern Guilt sees Danger Mouse take over the production duties this time (instead of the Dust Brothers or Nigel Godrich who have been trading off duties since Odelay), and the result is exactly what you would expect from this pairing, an album enjoyable to dance to or listen to by yourself in your headphones. While this isn't the epic piece The Information was, the less than 34 minutes experience seems perfect for the upper music/downer lyrics dichotomy exploration he embarks on here. If you come to this album looking for some sort of Beck you want or expect, you might be disappointed, but take it for it is, and it's a pretty damn good album.

Sigur Ros (Reykjavik, Iceland)

Sigur Ros's newest full-length sees the band attempting to shake up a formula that has yielded some seriously stunning results in the past without steering too far away from their characteristic sound. This is of course a problematic area to be in when you are a band like Sigur Ros (sort of the same place The Mars Volta is in right now); Do you keep on doing the same thing that works over your entire career and people attack your for being one-dimensional, or do you risk your fanbase and go in a starkly different direction? Sigur Ros have choose a middle road with an album that sounds very different and very much like their previous work at the same time (and of course many critics have hated on this choice as well). They used an outside producer for the first time, recorded the album in different cities across the globe, and shortened the studio time to throw them out of their comfort zone. The finished product is a fairly schizophrenic piece that bounces around much more lightly and upbeat at times than their previous stuff, but remains soft and pretty at other times and still contains a familiar taste of the grand and sublime.

What The Hell Am I Listening to?!?

While I have been gallivanting around for the last month, hott new albums just keep on dropping. I'm abridging an already succinct segment to keep up. Here's three episodes of What The Hell shrink wrapped together. Since I am a big fan of the run-on sentence, I give you micro-reviews of my summer soundtrack so far:

First up, some artists whose sounds characterize the best and brightest of this decade:

Animal Collective (Baltimore, MD)

One of the greatest bands of this generation offer up 25 more minutes of bliss.

(BUY Water Curses)(Myspace) Animal Collective : Water Curses

No Age (Los Angeles, CA)

2008 hypelicious duo that lives up to its praises, so don't miss out on one of the best albums of the year so far.

(BUY Nouns)(Myspace) No Age : Teen Creeps

Excepter (Brooklyn, NY)

Electronic noise stuff that is as fun as it is creative and weird.

(BUY Debt Dept.)(Myspace) Excepter : Kill People

Pyramids (Denton, TX)

Post-rock that actually lives up to that genre's ethic of breaking down conventional song structures rather than sounding like everything else, so pick up a favourite album of mine so far this year and blast it.

(BUY Pyraminds)(Myspace) Pyramids : This House Is Like Any Other World

Russian Circles (Chicago, IL)

Think Pelican except tighter, more epic, and in power-trio form.

(BUY Station)(Myspace)
Russian Circles : Campaign

Ok, now here's some dance music for those long summer nights:

Health (Los Angeles, CA)

Health's debut full-length from last year gets remixed into a perfect dance-noise album.

(BUY Disco)(Myspace) Health : Triceratops (Acid Girls Remix A)

Crystal Castles (Toronto, ON)

These controversial Canadians are making dance songs that sound fresh and interesting.

(BUY Crystal Castles)(Myspace) Crystal Castles : Crime Wave (Crystal Castles v. Health)

Femme Fatality (St. Louis, MO)

These guys are like the Eminem of the dance-rock world, and while not all of this album is top-notch, when they hit it right it's really fun.

(BUY One's Not Enough)(Myspace) Femme Fatality : Still Alive

Girl Talk (Pittsburgh, PA)

The king of the ridiculous ADD party-mash-up album ups the ante again.

(BUY Feed The Animals)(Myspace) Girl Talk : In Step

And then some indie-rock with an alt-country twang:

Silver Jews (Nasheville, TN)

Brilliant songwriting that makes an ancient pop genre sound new and intriguing.

(BUY Lookout Mountain, Lookout Sea)(Myspace) Silver Jews : Suffering Jukebox

Bowerbirds (Raleigh, NC)

I missed this 2007 gem, but it got a recent re-release with bonus tracks, so make sure you catch it too.

(BUY Hymns For A Dark Horse)(Myspace) Bowerbirds : Hooves

Rotary Downs (New Orleans, LA)

This album is like Mellow Gold era Beck meets Kerosene Hat era Cracker meets Pavement.

(BUY Long After The Thrill)(Myspace) Rotary Downs : C'mon, Take A Hit

Ok, all new heavy rotation list coming.

What The Hell Am I Listening to?!?

I love my eMusic account and I raided it for some recently released albums that I had not hit yet. Turns out that there were some sassy ladies waiting. Currently, they’ve got my attention in the headphones.

Santogold (Brooklyn, NY)

Santi White emerges as Santogold on her full-length debut of the same name. The revolving door of producers to appear on the release serve up indie-dub-punk with a side of 80’s sheen. Additionally, this former A&R rep for Epic made sure that she had help with the writing behind each track as well. This combination makes it easy for many of the songs to be winners. However, this method of production also detracts from the album holistically – at times it feels like listening to a lot of singles. Santogold showcases versatile vocal styles and perhaps I’m only impressed more by how many genres get crammed into several jams. This is one of those albums you’ll get caught bumpin when you think you’re alone and you’re doing the stupid dance you made up to your favorite track. It’ll be ok, though. You caught that friend listening to Barry Manilow that one time.

The Long Blondes (Sheffield, England)

The Long Blondes return with Couples, their sophomore follow-up to the blazing Someone to Drive You Home. Kate and Co. are definitely stretching their legs and, despite a shorter album, offer greater extremes and richer textures than before. I’m rewarded by continued listens (the rule) and that’s just dandy because the first time I heard it (the exception) I wanted to run back to “Giddy Stratospheres.” At the moment, the tracks are more hit than miss. However, I’m not near declaring it better than their previous effort. We’ll see how time treats this album through the summer months. Don’t worry, Kate. I still have a crush on you.

What The Hell Am I Listening to?!?

The theme for today is artists that should be more hyped on the interwebs:

Evangelista (Los Angeles, CA/Montreal, Canada)

I discovered Carla Bozulich's Evangelista right when I started Ohmpark, and it was one of my favourite albums from 2006. She has now taken the name of that album as the name of her band and just released Hello, Voyager, which has gathered everything I loved about Evangelista and upped the ante. What Carla Bozulich brings to the table is dark and and in your face vocals and lyrics that hit you hard in the depths of your soul. She is experimental, but not in a way that is hard to appreciate, and she jumps from style to style without ever seeming ambling or lost. I'm totally in love with this release right now, so don't miss out:

Genghis Tron (Philadelphia, PA)

I just caught this arty-metal trio this week and they were badass. With bands like Mastodon and Mastodon Jr (Baroness) getting attention in the indie rock blog world, it is only a matter of time before these guys get their own hype bandwagon. Armed with digital drums instead of a drummer and lots of keys, their synthetic brand of metal create a very interesting aesthetic that stands above a genre that doesn't always reward outside-of-the-box thinking. No matter where your tastes lie, there is something worthy of your ears on Board Up The House.

Brass Bed (Lafayette, LA)

We had Brass Bed in Atlanta for a house party earlier this year and they absolutely killed it. They do a '60's psychedelic style blended with many other influences that feels fresh and original. Their first professionally recorded release, Midnight Matinee, is one of those rare albums where every single song on it is a hit, while the sum its parts make up a fun and engaging sonic experience. Get hip to them before the inevitable blow up:

What The Hell Am I Listening to?!?

Ok, this episode of "What The Hell" is gonna be large on tunes. There seems to be so many worthwhile albums dropping right now, it is hard to keep up. A great problem to have. Here are the many bands I'm crushing on right now like a little music slut:

Russian Spy Camera (Athens, Ga)

I know Ichuda already did a review of this album, but I've really gotten into this one hard, so I'm going to continue to hype it. Let me stress that you can download their entire album for free from their website. If you like good music, you will be wronging yourself if you do not go pick that up.

Cryptology

Cults

The Raveonettes (Copenhagen, Denmark)

One major trend from bands this year is albums produced with heavy distortion a la The Jesus And Mary Chain. Bands like The Magnetic Fields and Times New Viking are great examples. So far, though, I think The Raveonettes' new album Lust Lust Lust is my favourite to employ those sorts of techniques.

Dead Sound

Blush

Buy Lust Lust Lust here

The Ruby Suns (Auckland, New Zealand)

The other popular trend in music this year is the Animal Collective influence. I'm surprised it took this long for AC to become so influential to new artists, but it was certainly inevitable. While The Dodos and El Guincho are fine acts, something about them feels like they are stealing the Collective's sound a little too much. Sort of like when I listen to Black Mountain or The Sword and their absorption of the '70s sounds. Sure they are fun and enjoyable to listen to, but I could never get totally obsessed with someone who is bascially copy-catting someone else. But, The Ruby Suns' new album, Sea Lion, seems to me to be the perfect blend of AC love and originality. They will be at The Drunken Unicorn Monday night.

Hot Chip (London, UK)

The new Hot Chip joint didn't seem to get its fair fill of the Internet hype, but I've really been enjoying it. There are certainly some songs that are better than others, but the many great ones are really incredible. If you like dance music with a soul like I do, check this one:

Destroyer (Vancouver, BC, Canada)

Mostly because of Daniel Bejar's vocal style, Destroyer seems to be an act that you either love or can't really get into. Being on the love side of it myself, I'll make my plea to those who listened to it and thought "This sounds just like the last album". On the surface, sure, but if you dig into it, you'll find a much more epic experience and I think this may be his best yet. Destroyer will be in Atlanta later this month.

What The Hell Am I Listening to?!?

SXSW Bands are invading my Ipod and CD players now that I am back. There are so many to look into, but a few albums from the bands I managed to catch have stood out as some of the best of 2008 so far:

Kaki King

Originally from Atlanta, Kaki King is singer/songwriter/guitar player Katherine Elizabeth King. Her guitar work is an interesting style that is very percussive using slaps and taps. Her newest album, Dreaming Of Revenge, has been in my heaviest of rotations since catching her in Austin. It is about half instrumental ethereal post-rocky stuff, half fascinating and alluring pop songs. This release seems to be a little under the radar right now in hype-land, but it is too good to stay that way for long:

Plants And Animals

While doing my 2007 year end research and digging, Plants And Animal's With/Avec EP was one of the best discoveries I came across. One of the things I love about this band is they attempt to make each and every song a monumental event. Their debut LP, Parc Avenue, takes everything great about their short release and expands it on this tremendous album.

What The Hell Am I Listening to?!?

Evangelicals (Norman, Oklahoma)

I think right now if I had to pick my favourite album to come out this year, it would probably be Evangelicals' second album, The Evening Descends. It is so psychedelic and so operatic. This is one of those albums where I get excited as each new song begins. The kaleidoscopic sonic journey certainly gives a nod to fellow Oklahomans The Flaming Lips as well as many other folks, but the last thing you could accuse this band of is being unoriginal with its mix of influences. If you haven't rocked this one yet, don't delay any longer:

Beck (Los Angeles, Ca)

Beck is one of my favourite musicians and every time I return to one of his albums, I fall in love with what he does all over again. I recently picked up a copy of the Deluxe Odelay, and have been partying like its 1996. I have really enjoyed the Deluxe reissues I have picked up over the years as they are always full of fun extras, but I have to say this may be the best Deluxe album version I've got yet in terms of bonus material. Very much worth purchasing:

What The Hell Am I Listening to?!?

With the holiday season lull in new releases I had gotten really burnt out on just about everything I had been listening to and was worried it would be a while before I'd hear some great new albums. Then all of a sudden in the last two weeks I've discovered all sorts of cool stuff. Here's two of my favourites from January:

The Magnetic Fields (New York, NY)

The Magnetic Field's newest album, Distortion, is their attempt to be more The Jesus And Mary Chain than The Jesus And Mary Chain. If that reference point doesn't mean much to you, let me describe what this album sounds like to me: Imagine you are an astronaut alone on a spaceship that has malfunctioned and is spinning out of control into deep space for a long time. You are in the thralls of despair and going crazy being trapped alone. Then, suddenly your FM radio transmitter catches a signal of some '60s oldies radio station from Earth. But between the distorted interference of the weak signal and your warped brain, the music sounds dark and evil. If that sounds interesting to you, check this one out:

Please Stop Dancing

Too Drunk to Dream

Buy Distortion Here

Dengue Fever (Los Angeles, Ca)

With Dengue Fever, not only have I discovered a great band, but I've also learned some history lessons I didn't really know. During the Vietnam War, native Cambodia '60s pop music was heavily influenced by US Forces radio broadcasts of surf rock and soul music. When the Khmer Rouge came to power in the '70s, they banned pop music and many of the artists making this sort of stuff mysteriously disappeared. Dengue Fever came about after LA native Ethan Holtzman traveled to Cambodia and discovered this music. He and his brother teamed up with lead-singer Chhom Nimol who sang in the Khmer language to form a nu-Cambodia pop band and thus Dengue Fever was born. Their third full-length, Venus On Earth, is a fun and psychedelic trip through some great world music:

What The Hell Am I Listening To?!?

Today's theme, suggested albums from the readers (keep suggesting):

Sea Wolf

Thanks to TJ (check his blog) for pointing out Sea Wolf's Leaves In The River. I might have overlooked this release due to all the artists these days with "wolf" in their name confusing me. This band, fronted by Irving's Alex Church, does indie-pop better than most that remind me a little of Earlimart, Bright Eyes, and maybe even Arcade Fire at times. If you want a nice, low-key album that just sounds beautiful from front to back, this is for you:

Baroness

Ichuda hit me off with this metal outfit from Savannah, Ga's newest release, Red Album. It's great to see a good band emerge from a music scene that is pretty lacking at best. What The Hell Am I Listening To?!?

Grizzly Bear

It's rare that one album turns me into a die-hard fan of a band, but Grizzly Bear's Yellow House from last year is one of those albums. The easiest tell-tale sign of how good music is to me is how many times I can listen to something without it getting stale, and when it is really great, it gets better with more listens. I'm still not sick of Yellow House, but now with their newest release, the Friend EP, i have even more to obsess about. As much as i love this new release, it would be hard for me to suggest it to someone who hasn't listened to Yellow House or seen them live, because Friend is all about re-interpreting themselves, both by Grizzly Bear and a cast of other great young musicians, and so the coolest things on here are best in the context of knowing them well. My advice to you is go listen to Yellow House about ten times if you haven't, and if you can stop listening to it, then go get Friend.

Division Day

A great album I just discovered recently is Beartrap Island. This first full-length release from California's Division Day, who have been a band since 2001, is one of those albums that are wholly accessible (I wouldn't be surprised if 99X was playing it in their rotation right now) but also contains a vast amount of lyrical and musical depth. The sound kind of reminds me of The Stills' Logic Will Break Your Heart but with much more sonic diversity. Taking pessimistic and dark ideas and applying those to upbeat and pretty music is a flavor i'm very fond of and Division Day do it well.

What The Hell Am I Listening To?!?

Today's theme: From Old-school folk to Nu-school dope

Iron And Wine

Iron And Wine's 2005 EP Woman King was one of those rare EPs that are so good you forget it is not a full-length album. He hit a stride in his songwriting that produced purely beautiful, perfect songs and the question was whether this was a peak moment or whether Sam Beam could continue on in this fuller, more engaging type of stuff as opposed to his earlier, quieter folk songs. With his third LP, The Shepherd's Dog, he has proved that Woman King was no fluke and that he is wholly capable of producing top-notch tunes in bulk. Check it out yourself:

Soulsavers

The British production and remixing team of Rich Machin and Ian Glover's second album, It's Not How Far You Fall, It's The Way You Land, has been in my heavy rotation lately and it should be in yours as well. Featuring Screaming Trees' Mark Lanegan on vocals all over it, it's a great album that sort of feels like a more folksy and bluesy version of The Cinematic Orchestra. The opening track "Revival" is such an epic and gorgeous song:

Phosphorescent

I just listened to Pride last night for the first time and was blown away by how awesome this album is. Typically I let a new album marinate in my brain for a little while before I talk about it here, but I felt the short release sort of reminded me a lot of Iron And Wine in a more indie-rock way and when I experience a rare amazing first listen I have to pass it on. Another great band i've just recently got turned on to is Castanets, aka Raymond Raposa plus revolving cast. There's something so cool about taking such a conservative sound such as folk and pushing the limits of experimental with it.

What The Hell Am I Listening To?!?

Today's theme, IRCILFs:

PJ Harvey

Having an artist you've been a fan of for a long time drop an album that completely reawakens your fandom for that artist is such a cool thing. PJ and me go way back, and I had sort of come to the conclusion that maybe she was another victim of losing your edge as you get older and that the sort of music she used to make required a youthful angst to be phenomenal. That may or may not be true, but instead of trying to recapture her roots (Like her slightly unsuccessful attempt on Uh Huh Her), she went in a completely new direction with an album packed full of piano ballads. I was starting to doubt I was listening to the right album at first listen until I heard her sing the album title. It's like since Cat Power decided to be Wynonna Judd, PJ Harvey decided to pick-up where Chan left off after You Are Free. The results are an amazing piece of work if you don't have any pre-conceived notions of what you want to hear from her. I've been jamming it hard and you should too:

The Fiery Furnaces

Another musical act I used to be obsessed with but sort of fell off the bandwagon is The Fiery Furnaces. As much as I respect the art of Rehearsing My Choir, I could never really get into it. And I don't dislike Bitter Tea, but it didn't really do it for me either. But their newest release, Widow City, is everything i loved from this band and more. When I first discovered these guys at Coachella, I remember just being blown away by the ridiculous amount of twists and turns in the music, switching time signatures and melodies every few seconds, but still retaining a sound that contained pop sensibilities. Widow City is a return to walking between art and pop and they do it so well:

What The Hell (Hottness) Am I Listening To?!?

Since rarely do I discover two albums that totally amaze me at the same time, I've decided to combine two of my regular segments to convince you to check these albums out:

Akron/Family

The Akron/Family show i caught at the Earl early this year blew my mind and is still one of my top 3 favourite shows of the year. Ever since catching them live, I've searched out as much of their material as possible. While i did find some really good stuff, none of their previous studio work felt anywhere near the intensity level their live show was at, and I had pretty much assumed that they were just a band that was much better live. Their newest release, Love Is Simple, has totally changed my mind. In addition to every song being a stand alone hit, the album takes you on a journey through every emotion and dimension this band has mastered. They are anchored in conservative musicology like The Beatles and Grateful Dead but find extremely interesting places to go with that foundation. I consider these guys the greatest jamband going right now, and i doubt most of the wooks and bro-skies have ever heard of these guys. Check them out:

Thurston's latest solo offering might be the most accessable Sonic Youth related release ever. While the masses of SY followers are making experiment and noise more mainstream every day, Thurston and Company have spent most of this decade crafting stunning pop songs, and Trees Outside The Academy is no exception. For a huge fan like me, this album feels like a greatest hits of Moore's riffs and sound effects stripped down and scultped into a completely unique and original piece of work. Don't miss this one:

I'm very impressed with the maturity this band has shown on Planet Of Ice with respect to the previous Menos El Oso and they are sort of a window into what a band like Incubus could have been had they gone in a different direction from the start.

Post-rock is an exciting genre right now because it is blowing up, and so many great bands are emerging. The Graboids are one band that is standing out to me. The album Infinite Delay is able to both master conventional post-rock soundscapes and create completely new ones on a beautifully sculpted piece of work. I also love the out of nowhere hip-hop track "Top Of The Network" featuring Jeremiah. Check it out:

Pelican (Chicago, IL)

One interesting conglomeration of genres that's happening right now is Post-metal. Pelican's City of Echoes is one of the best examples of this I've heard. It takes the best of both worlds into a brilliant listen. They will be at The Drunken Unicorn Tuesday July 31st so mark it down. Check it out yo:

Fridge (Putney, UK)

As Post-Rock becomes more mainstream, bands inside the genre will have to step up to the plate and push it in new directions. Fridge's new album The Sun is a great demonstration of what is possible when you don't follow the rules. Give them a listen:

What The Hell Am I Listening To?!?

Porcupine Tree : Fear Of A Blank Planet

Porcupine Tree is a band I've only gotten into over the last year and i am really starting to love them. I've been listening to this new album over and over again. A really great concept album with some mind-blowing music, especially the almost 18-minute long Anesthetize. Pick this album up:

Dinosaur Jr : Beyond

I'm not sure why I had slightly lower expectations from this album, especially considering I've loved J Mascis' and Lou Barlow's respective recent solo work. Beyond is everything a Dinosaur Jr fan could hope for. They are in top form and every song on this rocks out. Check it:

What The Hell Am I Listening To?!?

Theme for today is bands I should have known about last year:

Silversun Pickups

Brian from Slow Motion Crash suggested this band to me at an ISP show earlier this year and I'm really glad he did, because I've been listening to it constantly. It is pretty much straight-up rock with a hint of dissidence weaved throughout. Carnavas is the name of this Los Angeles, California four-piece's first full length and I highly recommend checking it out. Give these tracks a listen:

Portugal. The Man

I just recently discovered this Alaskan band and I feel like they could emerge as truly great. They released an EP earlier this year called It's Complicated Being A Wizard and that's what turned me on to them. In addition to being a great piece of music utilizing drum machines in a rock format, it's also a concept album where the first 23-minute track is then revisited broken down into several different tracks named after types of magic. After getting heavy into that EP, I discovered their album from last year Waiter: "You Vultures!", and its really good too. There's certainly parallels you can draw to the vocals of The Mars Volta, but they incorporate many different influences and create a distinct sound of their own. They are currently working on a new album due out this year and I am excited. Give them a listen:

What The Hell Am I Listening To?!?

CocoRosie : The Adventures Of Ghosthorse And Stilborn

This album has been pretty much trashed by most of the blogosphere (Pitchfork gave it a 2.3) but I really love it. I don't have a lot of familiarity with their previous albums (although that will soon change) but i really believe that Ghosthorse And Stillborn holds up to almost any record to come out this year. CocoRosie is two sisters doing indie-folk with a little opera and hip-hop thrown in. They both do vocals, and one plays alot of instruments and the other plays experimental percussion instruments like children's learning devices and gold chains. Check it out:

Low : Guns And Drums

I have been listening to many mediocre albums lately and Guns And Drums has been an exception. This Duluth, Minnesota trio has something really special here and I wish I would have gotten into this band earlier. Stylistically they feel like a stripped down indie rock outfit with very anthemetic songs, or "Slowcore" as they are known, and i will be delving deep into this band's catalog after hearing this great album. Give it a listen:

What The Hell Am I Listening To?!?

Cyann & Ben : Sweet Beliefs

This French band kinda has elements of Sigur Ros, Explosions In the Sky, Mew, Radiohead, and some other stuff. Seriously, it's an amazing hybrid of great styles. Their new album, Sweet Beliefs, is stunningly gorgeous and a great "take-you-on-a-sonic-journey" album. Pick yourself up a copy:

Amon Tobin : The Foley Room

Shot by Maryse Larivière

This Brazillian born, Uk bred DJ does jazzy IDM and DMB that could border into post-rock in sound. Typically known for great sampling, Amon Tobin incorporates mostly in the field recordings such as cats eating rats and ants eating grass(WTF) on this album. He seems to be worried that illegal file sharing could be hurting his album sales so if you like the tracks, support him and get the album cuz it is worth it:

What The Hell Am I Listening To?!?

31Knots

31Knots : From The Days And Nights Of Everything Anywhere

This 3-piece claiming both Portland and San Francisco have been jamming hard on my ipod for the last week. They remind me a little bit of Cursive and Q And Not U, but have a different style of their own. Check them out:

Arbouretum

Arbouretum : Rites Of Uncovering

Some stoner-folk-rock from Baltimore, MD. Former drummer for Anomoanon plays guitar and sings in this project and does both very well. Kind of Jeff Buckley meets Neil Young. Give these track a listen and then pick this one up:

What The Hell Am I Listening To?!?

Some really good stuff:

Menomena

This Portland 3-piece's Friend And Foe is quickly becoming one of my favourites of the year. Describing this band is difficult for me, a little Clouds Taste Metallic era Flaming Lips, maybe a touch of old school Modest Mouse, maybe a touch of Morphine. I don't know. Give these tracks a listen, and if you like, go get the album because every song on this thing is great.
Buy Menomena : Friend And Foe

Explosions In The Sky

Their new album, All Of A Sudden I Miss Everyone, is a great example of a band that just does their thing, and gets better and better. Many may think that this album sounds very much like most of their others, and that's somewhat true, but some bands just do what they do masterfully, and that's all they need to do. Sometimes a band just doesn't have to head off into another direction (Modest Mouse comes to mind). Give a listen to a great band in their prime:
Buy Explosions In The Sky : All Of A Sudden I Miss Everyone

Do Make Say Think

Another great post-rock album i've been listening to is DMST's You, You're a History In Rust. Part of the Broken Social Scene extended family, these guys are really awesome. Where the new Explosions In The Sky record works to perfect an already "classic" style of post-rock, this album takes alot more liberties and avoids any derivative labels. Enjoy:
Buy Do Make Say Think : You, You're A History In Rust

Final Fantasy

I knew when I did my top 50 List of 2006, that i would miss some albums that deserved to be on it because I had only a limited amount of time and resources. He Poos Clouds is the first one. Final Fantasy (aka Owen Pallett) is a violinist/vocalist who played with Arcade Fire on tour and even did some of the string arrangements on their new album, Neon Bible. This second full album as Final Fantasy is just simply phenonemal. You really need to get this:

What The Hell Am I Listening To?!?

Atlanta music edition of "What The Hell":

Moorish Idols: Moorish Idols EP

With these guys it's hard for me to make comparisons because they're sound is very unique, but still contains whispers of an uncountable amount of music. Really, if you enjoy the greater spectrum of rock music there's something here for you. On top of containing 4 stunning songs, the EP packaging kicks ass. Guitarist David Norbery's sketches in the booklet and personalized CD designs per each different EP give this piece of art another dimension. I urge you to pick this up and give it a listen:
You can pick up a copy of this at Criminal Records, at one of their shows that you need to see, or snail mail via their Myspace page

Untied States: Retail Detail

Students of the school of Sonic Youth, Untied States are quietly one of Atlanta's best bands. The more i listen to this album, the more I fall in love with it. If you too enjoy the experience of getting into challenging music, get this and you will not be dissappointed:

Black Lips: Los Valientes Del Mondo Nuevo

Somewhere between Rock 'n Roll, Punk, and something else is where Black Lips rocks faces off. This live album was recorded in some craptastic club in Tijuana, Mexico and through-out the performace the band is virtually fighting the tequilla-crazed audience. If you've seen the Black Lips, you know this is the perfect setting for these guys. A one-of-a-kind live album that you need to buy:

What The Hell Am I Listening To?!?

Here's some previews of some albums I've been listening to alot lately:

Of Montreal : Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer?

First, this is a very well-done personal relationship concept album in the vein of Pink Floyd's The Wall where singer/sonwriter Kevin Barnes transforms into "Georgie Fruit" halfway through the album on the almost 12 minute long The Past is a Grotesque Animal. Stylistically, it is pretty much the polar opposite of The Wall, channeling electronic dance music and a little funk to produce a very upbeat, yet dark experience. Vocals and Lyrics are badass as well.

Listen to:

Cougar : Law

Cougar is a Madison, Wisconsin band that describe themselves as "emergency rock". The album was released in the UK early last year but not released in the U.S. until last month for some reason. The album was recorded by John McEntire (Tortoise, the Sea and Cake) and his imprint is easily felt on it. Check it out:

Listen to:

Sloan : Never Hear The End Of It

This album by the Canadian rockers Sloan was also released in the US last month, but originally in Cananda last year. It has 30 tracks, so it's alot of very short songs strung together to all sound like one. I've been enjoying it alot:
