Atlanta Album Preview: Dead Confederate

So they rep the little A's more than the big A these days, but we'll still claim them ITP anyways. Their debut full-length, Wrecking Ball, hits stores September 16th and I can't wait. It is supposed to be 10 songs, about an hour long, and contains a 12 minute jammer. They are doing a record release show at the Earl September 20th so don't miss that. You can watch Hardy Morris do "The Wrecking Ball" acoustic backstage at Bonnaroo here. And a recent live show for you:

Live Show: Pearl Jam (7/13/1998)

Photo: Danny Clinch

The only Bonnaroo headliner I'm really interested in is the boys from Seattle. If there was any one band that got the most backlash from the early '90s grunge blow up, it is obviously Pearl Jam. There are a lot of reasons for this. They didn't go in a cliche' direction and just keep churning out radio friendly rockers. They seem to be the only major band from that era that never broke up so they are the only one that stuck around long enough for all bandwagoners to get sick of them. They speak out on political issues and for some reason people don't like that. And probably worst of all, starting in the middle 90's and continuing even today, too many douchebags ripped Eddie Vedder's vocal stylings resulting in bands ranging from "utterly terrible" to "oh my god, shoot me in the face".

While their relevance and influence on music today may seem fairly non-existent, that doesn't mean they haven't produced some amazing music and still do a hell of great live show. I'm the first to hate on stadium rock shows, but Pearl Jam sure puts forth a convincing argument for them. The show I choose below starts off with a couple songs from their fourth full length, No Code. While most will cite this as the point where they began to fall off, it is hard for me to think of a more underrated album. The relative lack of hard rocking audience pleasers certainly didn't make them more popular, but it did give them a chance to really dig into their capacity for songwriting, and the results were an album that I think has aged better than most from that genre. If you have any apprehensions about Pearl Jam being a worthwhile act to see, pick up a copy of No Code and listen to this show:

Live Show: Cat Power (3/7/1997)

Another live show from an artist at Bonnaroo. Despite the fact that Chan Marshall and I broke up at Pitchfork Fest last year, and most likely I'm not going to catch her at the 'roo this year, her older stuff is just so amazing that I'll use any excuse I can to post some. Even though I really hate the nu-Cat Power post-You Are Free where she only does covers and cliche sounding country songs, there is no substitute for stuff like this:

CAT POWER

Live Show: Fleet Foxes (4/14/2008)

The blogosphere has fallen in love with this band almost as hard as they did for Vampire Weekend pre-backlash. I like them, but I sort of file them in the same spot I put bands like Black Mountain and The Sword, a very enjoyable band, but not really the most original. And its not the Band Of Horses/My Morning Jacket similarities that bother me as much as the Neil Young riffs that seem overtly stolen. But regardless of their lack of progressiveness or uniqueness, they are still very nice to listen to, so here is a live show for you to jam:

Live Show: Silversun Pickups (11/17/2007)

Sunday night I caught the first half of the 99x Mistle Toe Jam and it was pretty cool. I learned a few things from the night:

1. I really hate having to drive Outside The Perimeter for a concert.
2. The traffic situation at The Gwinnett Center Arena is horribly ridiculous.
3. I've decided that some of The Shins stuff is amazing, and a bunch of it is way too boring to me.
4. Paste magazine, which I usually enjoy, has the worst top album list of 2007 I've seen so far.
5. The Silversun Pickups are as great live as I had hoped they would be.
6. Silversun Pickups have been touring for 2 years straight and this was their last show of that tour. Hopefully they are going to go make another great album. So, here's a show from last month to jam:

Modest Mouse will be here Saturday so here's a show. The Modest Mouse traders are in the process of torrenting every known MM show that exists on Dimeadozen, so you should check it out.

The info file says "Source Unknown." The sound is good, either a SBD or a real good AUD. This show was supposed to be posted last week by a participant in our little Mouse gig postings but hasn't been, so I'll do it. Enjoy and thanks to the original seeders and tapers..

Live Show: Pnuma Trio (6-8-06)

At Wakarusa last year I discovered that I really like LEDM (Live Electronic Dance Music). The first night there i caught this late night Pnuma Trio show and it was awesome. Fueled by jager and Fat Tire, I'm pretty sure I can make out my screaming on this recording. I'll be at Smith's Old Bar tommorrow night to get tanked, dance my ass off, and enjoy Pnuma Trio again. You should too.
